related to the topic but according to stats I have read something like 20% of the American population is functionally illiterate to a noticeable degree.
I know a lot of folks are shyt at reading but damn didn't realize it was that bad

Why?

Because shytting on Jackie Robinson, claiming he did what he did and went through what he went through for personal gain...or worse, for some sort of "pat on the head from white people", is incredibly ignorant and disrespectful.

The integration of MLB was the first step towards the end of the Negro Leagues, a point I've made many times on here. It was bittersweet, but it was necessary, inevitable and long overdue by the time it occurred in '46/'47.

By looking at these high flying dunks, you would be led to believe this guy is one of those athletes who read at a grade school level. When you get the privilege of hearing how well he speaks, you wish more black student athletes were like him. This student athlete is from Chicago and went to Whitney Young, the same high school our first lady went to.

Whitney Young is a "magnet" school right? Lets not act like all public schools have the same quality of learning. :aicmon:

How does a thread full of people miss (or ignore) my point. :what: Let me sum up my issue in one sentence.

The public school system that coddles these kids are setting them up to fail when they reach college level.

Overdue for what? :what: They had a successful, profitable LEAGUE that was making them money.

That's what Im talking about. Go to the MLB to get shiitted on and disrespected...it doesn't make sense. If you have your own and you are doing well why abandon what you have to integrate?

All that integration bullshyt was the cause for not just the dissolving of the Negro Leagues but the dissolving of many thriving black communities that controlled the schools system, churches, and economy. Fast forward and now we own almost NOTHING and we are left to beg for fair treatment when in the past we could determine how well we were treated because WE OWNED EVERYTHING WE HAD!

You can :stopitslime: all you want, no way in hell a 9th grader should feel ok knowing the highest level of literature they can stammer through is "the cat in the hat". I'm not asking all these kids to go be 4.0, AP class, 2000 SAT students, but academic complacency at 7th grade and up is a mark of a lazy kid - it's just as big a strike against the kid as it is against the parents who aren't involved in their kids' learning and the teachers who pass them.

Reading at a 4th grade level? Really breh? You're going to try to defend this?

Stop it....You reek of immaturity.....If a kid passes through 8 levels of school and can't read, its not his fault. His parents and the school failed him.....The most soulless white republican is not going to blame a 14 year old adolescent for lacking a skill set he should have learned by the 2nd grade. That's a hallmark indicator of institution and parental failure because simply put, as a child, he is not responsible for his education whether you believe it or not.....

Dude, if you get to ninth grade a realize you can't read and are ok with that, that's on you. This has nothing to do with race or politics so stop. There are all sorts of free programs to help kids get BASIC skills. Too many black kids are complacement with/celebrate poor academic achievement, I don't see how anyone is ok with being functionally illiterate when that's not anywhere close to being the norm in our country....and then to still be ok with it in college, nah. I'm done

Categorically untrue........Take that shyt to st0rmfr0nt......Yall got to be some of the slowest motherfukkers in the world.....Only on the internet do people say a 13 year old needs to pull himself up by his own bootstraps...This is some of the most illogical, backwards thinking I've heard....Lets excuse all the people that failed the young man before the ninth grade and put all of the onus of his future success solely on him, even though he's emotionally and pyschologically under developed.....:smh:

Oh. And its always about race and politics.......

Your reading comprehension failed, in my first quote I already said parents and schools failed, especially grade school, but at a certain age, certainly by high school, kids need to take accountability as well. Not all schools are equal, but each school teaches you how to read, write, multiply, and divide, that's basics, and yes, at 14/15 you should be motivated to be proficient in those things, not excellent, but certainly not five years behind. I worked with HS kids throughout college and after, you don't have to be in the front of your class or Ivy League material to care about learning the material.

So how do 15% of these kids slip through the cracks then? And if a kid has been getting by for 6-7 years without being literate, then how does he all of a sudden become self motivated at 14?...Where does this self motivation to work extra hard and take after school courses to become literate gonna come from?....He's been getting by this far, why wouldn't he want to skate all the way to graduation........? My reading comprehension is excellent.....Its your idealistic view that a child is going to motivate himself to work harder for something he has no interest in that's questionable.....The fact that you think that a 14 year old understands the ramifications of being illiterate in society while he's yet to step foot in it leads me to believe you live a fantasy world

In Europe, do they care about the education level of their futbol players? I wonder what CNN would say about David Beckham, Frank Ribery and Cristiano Ronaldo :mjpls:
