Here's a short story - The Kobe Stimulus Package:

So, apparently, when my boy was in college, as all freshman are, he was broke as hell, and his parents would send him like $50 bucks lol. They werent tight on money obviously, but you know, some parents just make you get your own.

So, my boy said he had a Kobe autographed b-ball, that he was supposed to give to a Kobe stan (he said he was real cool with Vaneesa, so he would get her to get him to sign the stuff, so it wouldnt look like he was asking for 1000 autographs everyday lol).

So apparently, the Kobe stan is kicked outta school, so he is stuck with the ball. So, hes like wtf do I do with this - so ends up taking it to a sports memorabilia shop and they are like "Whoa, this is real", and give him $300 bucks. (how they verified it was real is still beyond me.)

So then he gets the bright idea to multiply this effort - so the rest of the semester, he becomes a mini mogul by getting Vanessa to send him a bunch of stuff, and he sells to to local shops, and makes super bank". Dope little come up.

So, one day, he gets the bright idea to sell a newspaper he had autographed. Now, this is a Philly newspaper, local sports (from like 1995-96) of Kobe declaring for draft. He said he got it signed as a joke, it was wrinkled, and only got Kobe to sign it because he made the front and the back of the paper. As in, "Yo - you made the front page AND the backpage of the newspaper - wtf. Sign both sides because this may be worth something fool :pachaha:"

So, fast forward - he brings the newspaper to the shop, and they say ":whew: - is 13 cool for this??"

He said "Hell YEA, $1300 for a old newspaper, damn!"

He says the shop owner is like " :heh:, $13,000"

So, my homeboy says, not only did I end up not making $13,000, but I ended up spending $100. To get it framed.

That's the frame that is still on his wall to this day, and I may even get a pic for yall one day, if it isn't too creepy.

Kobe is worth some $$$.

More actual personal Kobe & his cousins stories coming soon :smugdraper:
I'm confused how'd your boy make $13k but still got the newspaper? :dwillhuh:

So, since this is Kobe's last year, I decided to give TheColi a little treat...

I sometimes drop in with some crazy sports stories, especially from the NFL/NCAA, because I pretty much grew up in the sport, and have a couple of dope threads somewhere around here, which are basically AMA's. (can somebody up the "True Stories from Sports" thread that had everyone giving personal, crazy pro sports stories? I was gonna post this there.")

So, lets get to it - my close friend grew up with Kobe. Only within the past few weeks have we really talked about it, but his stories are always dope.

Basically, his dad is a former NBA player, and grew up/close friends with Kobes father, so he has known the dude since birth (Kobe is about 3-4 years older), and has little kid pics together and all that.

So, Kobe was a regular dude, until he left to go to Italy, and came back basically "un-American" lol - he said he was really into soccer, culture, different languages, etc - just was a different dude. The crew was basically my friend, and Kobe, with Kobes cousins, and they all just basically hooped allday, everyday. Basically, Kobes cousin (who looks just like Kobe when he showed me his IG) was the high flyer, KB was just fundamental. Kobe would go to his hs games, even as he got bigger - that is, until he was a senior, where he would walk around in Kangols and sunglasses - but even after the NBA, he was like family.

He said the "strange" thing at the time is that Kobe would never hang out much outside of the court and home - he would skip every social event, because he was obsessed with working on his game - at 13, 14 15 years old.

The "greatest" basketball moment he says he ever saw in his life, was a 10th Kobe playing in a winter tourney against a guy who was considered the best in the state. He said everyone knew this dude, and this guy was a senior who was crushing everyone (the name escapes me.)

So basically, there was a stolen pass, and he said the whole gym kinda stopped - which is unusual, because it was a real HS game, so it was basically Kobe vs the Dude 1-on-1. Kobe crosses the dude with the God Shamgod (which he said was crazy, because he used to practice it every day, and everyone was like wtf, but he knew that was the move Kobe worked on every single day on air), and viscously dunks on him (he said we didnt even know Kobe could dunk like that) - but here is the kicker. He says for some reason, the gym was super quiet, or low for the moment, so you could here what the dude on court said.

10th grade Kobe looks at the dude (who fell down) and just says "Merry Christmas." :jawalrus:

The gym explodes, everyone goes crazy, and they have to briefly shut down the game. The Legend of Kobe is born.

I have more for you coming soon:
- He was there for the Jerry Stackhouse (who was in NBA) vs. Kobe (who was in hs) 1-on-1 Urban Legend
- Kobe's "generous" stimulus packages for his college buddies and cousins
- Practice habits
- Bean Bryant & why Kobe is GREAT

Why'd he snitch on shaq? :francis:

We dont have any post NBA stories. They lost contact, he is closer to Kobes cousins now moreso then Kobe. Just life before the NBA.

I'm gonna talk to my guy and get some more insight. This would make a great podcast - maybe Rome can interview him for the Coli, if he is cool with it....

i don't think kobe characterizes himself as a philly guy, and that's fine to me since he spent the majority of his life outside of the area.
i may be wrong with that but i vaguely remember him trying to distance himself when the topic came up during the 01 finals when philly fans were booing him

that being said dude def had a ton of philly influence since both his parents are born and bred philly heads with deep roots in west philly, he grew up a 10 minute walk from wynnefield, and spent summers in west philly with his grandparents and cousins.
i remember in the early 2000s i randomly saw kobe bryant by himself in east mount airy. he probably has all kinds of connections in the city, family and otherwise

Kobe feelings were hurt
