Brooklyn keeps on taking it.
And as far as fashion goes I always give the fashion Mecca of the south to Memphis.

Memphis dudes don’t really come off as dudes that wear things 5 years later. Even back in the early 00s even tho yo gotti had that 4XL white tee swag his jacket game, Jean and Kicks game was on point.

We also know Lil Wayne was heavily influenced by Dipset on the clothes he and birdman rocked.

Mr Crude, You have to to illustrate why based on those categories I listed & do a comparison vs my own “Name A Better Era”. You will then be rated on a scale of 1 to 5 ranging from poor to excellent. Your judge (s) will rate it based on these listed categories.

Proceed.
That’s a lot of typing brother but I’ll try a like bit.

TITANGRAPH WARNING

HOUSTON

90s early 2000s era (fashion) Houston helped usher in that era of throw back jerseys I remember when the start of White T’s, throwback jerseys, and Air Force Ones came about that was basically the style long before Nelly made a song about it. You go to the Kappa Beach Party in the late 90s and that’s literally how every dude was dressed.

Women/Dating there was a site called Houston Honeys back in the gap that chronicles all the Houston vixens long before these media sharing sites took off. I’ve noticed Houston was one of the first places to universally accepted thick women as a nice dating standard. Dudes up north (NYC, Bmore, and Philly) would have been calling Meg the Stallion type women fat pre-90s. The only reason ATL gets more credit here is their hip hop scene started taking off before H-Towns did, but H-Town was repping women like that long before.

Music- there is not a more unique music scene outside of maybe New Orleans. The Robert Earl Davis also known as DJ Screw ushered in the slowed down/screwed music. That was a whole new genre at the time. This is not to mention the other dope artist Houston had blowing up at the time that didn’t start getting love until later in other regions. The third coast was literally raised on UGK, Scarface, Devin The Dude, MJG & 8Ball (they were from Memphis but were in Houston heavily during the era through their association with Tony Draper and J. Prince) This is not to mention the guys that came from Swishahouse and Wreckshop like Slim Thug, Chamillionaire & Paul Wall, Lil Flip, Lil Troy, E.S.G., Fat Pat, Z-Ro. There are other guys like K-Rino as well that might be the most underrated rapper of all time. Houston also made the slab car scene popular.

Economic opportunity- Houston has been one of the faster growing cities in the US for probably the last 30 years or more. It’s the 4th largest city in the U.S. now and honestly reminds me of the L.A. of the south. Look at all the people that were relocating there from other places to get economic opportunities.

Vices- just like many other cities Houston has any vices a man could get into. There was drugs, street hustling, pimping, prostitution, gang banging (not like on the West Coast though), armed robbery, etc. Mess around and find yourself in parts of 5th Ward, Acres Homes, Greenspoint (gunpoint), parts of Denver Harbor, or some of those more dicey neighborhoods and you would get knocked. Some were very dangerous then, but those places also had a lot of culture and talent in them too so it was two fold.

Racial Climate- Houston, Texas is just like most other places in the South mostly segregated, racist law enforcement, racist/corrupt politicians, and just like most other conservative parts of the country were a lot of backwater cacs live.

I’ll agree with one thing there were people def wearing Air Force ones before Nelly made that song. I’m 31 years old and I swear Air Force 1s have been hot since my entire existence. Was rocking them since 12 when I could buy my own kicks with my own money
You gotta drop a vs my haitian brotha

I’ll give Atlanta the best dance songs in the early 00s. My childhood or I guess my high school years was dedicated to mostly southern music.

back then I didn’t even know there was NY vs south rivalry. I literally turned on BET and rocked to anything that sound poppin.

Crazy how these new New York dudes are dancing more than southern cats now lol

TITANGRAPH WARNING

BAY AREA 80s

Fashion- The fashion was heavily influenced by pimping and street action. Going back to the 70s watch that movie the Mack and part of the reason it was so successful was it’s accurate depictions of street life. A lot of those guys carried on that fly style of dress driving Cadillacs, Buicks, Oldsmobiles, etc. Dudes wearing dressing fly and shyt wanting to be gangsters. You also had the end of the Black power movement in the early 80s and hold over that we’re still rocking that style. It was unique and ahead of it’s time.

Women/Dating- there was lots of prostitution during this era, but the Bay Area has always been progressive. Not every woman was selling azz or addicted to the new drug called crack. Oakland had a large Black population and there were a lot of working class Black men and women that had access to one another.

Music- you had acts that got popping like MC Hammer that was huge during that era. It looked like he might be the Michael Jackson of hip hop for a little while until that taper off. You also had the Digital Underground along with 2Pac that were being to get popping. The Luniz were still regional artist. Too Short was huge all over the United States. I remember my older cousin bumping his ‘88 or ‘89. I remember thinking dang dude got a foul mouth but I learned to vibe with him later in the early 90s. You had other artist that were starting to get buzz like Tony! Toni! Tone! and En Vogue that were about to start popping. Music was bumping.

Economic opportunity- Oakland started losing jobs in the 80s. Downtown started to experience urban decay as a lot of jobs started to leave. When the Blacks and Hispanics move in the White folks always leave and a large tax base and businesses that depended on that left. Even though Oakland was experiencing a downward trend it was still more opportunities there than most of Southern and Midwest U.S.

Vices- Crack cocaine hit Oakland hard like other cities. Lots of pimping and prostitution as I touched on earlier and a lot of street level hustling as any other major city in America but White flight started to hurt Oakland.

Racial Climate- Oakland was and still is more progressive than Southern cities but cacs are still going to be racist and still cac.

Yeah but that dmv fashion back then was
full

slouch socks
full

nascar/m & m hoodies
full

tall ass beanies/skullies

them ugly ass fluorescent neon light space boots /shoes like foams pennies air bakins
full
all typa lowkey basketball shoes people wore in the dmv all them glow in the dark shoes got nikkas running around like power rangers lmao shyt plus nike boots airb sertigs air max nomos

New balance is cool though.

only thing good left out that era is Solbiato & Shooters

I do remember the females being wayyyyy finer in pg like drop dead gorgeous from out there in waldorf (I beleive christinia milian is from there), to bowie, to dc to va.

Lmao S/O to those who came before but I'll definitely say that my generation (millennials) arguably got the best DMV fashion. I've noticed that we have't been rocking foams like that since prolly 2015 but now everyone else outside the DMV are rocking them hardbody. Solbiato, Shooters, and Universal Madness been making a comeback but there's been a lot of local new school Black-owned cloth liners and designers pushing their products heavy.

Nike boots were iconic tho :blessed:

And we still be rocking fluorescent neon clothing/shoes to this day, even the 990's be glowing like mine as a matter of fact :russ:

Even with the homogenization of Black fashion and culture nowadays, we still manage to beat our own drum out here :wow:

What is your opinion about Jim Jones saying he made the Nike boots famous?

Don’t mistaken the word famous for start.

cause that’s been hot debate these past two weeks on social media.

wale vs Jim Jones.

Spoke to my Ghanaian friend about it and he said he agrees with Jim Jones cause he didn’t even know who Wale was at the time when he came out with Nike Boots song

The DMV brehettes from 95-2003 was something special breh and it pains me to even admit that as a Baltimore area breh lol. At least the ones that showed up at Morgan state in the late 90s and early 2000s. Never seen anything like it on that type of scale
But how cooperative were they?

Both a 3.5. Not bad.
Pros- well articulated, well read out, descriptive. More first hand knowledge on subject etc
Cons - not as engaging, lack of sense or humor, Mundane, a little dry.
