I think one thing I've noticed over the last few years is his engineer is kinda disservicing him. There's this hollow sound to his beats now whereas they used to be crunchier and thicker (:dame:) A lot of his recent output, the exact same beats would've been absolute bangers in 95-99 just off better mixing.

Yeah sometimes they sound like 6 sounds alternating instead of coming together as one beat.

A few more thoughts - sonically I feel like there were a lot of "creepy" "scary type" beats with a minimalist vibe. Some of the minimalist beats were cool (pause tapes I liked a lot) but idk what I was expecting. I think for the types of records on the album, letting Nas' lyrics shine was the best choice. I did hope for one "The Come Up/Watch out it go down" type beat tho ngl

It's crazy how divisive the beats are. Some I loved people hate and vice versa.

The are no bad beats here. Preemo does a good production job. The problem (if there is one) is that Nas is somewhere in the clouds with it on this album. Preemo, while good, just isn't at Nas' altitude here. So maybe he concluded that a more muted (or minimalist as you say) soundscape was best...because Nas is going crazy. The production already sounds better on second listen though, so I will hold off on a review/opinion for a while.
