Nas is a great songwriter too I disagree what you your saying he's a even better songwriter thank Kendrick and I fukk with kendrickWriting a great SONG is different than writing a great rap verse. And much more difficult. But when you can do both it's special. And not just in one style. But dozens. And that's exactly what Kendrick does. And he wasn't doing it the easy way. To Pimp a butterfly was a straight up raw underground hip-hop album with heavy jazz and funk influence. "alright" was a 100% conscious boom bap song that turned into a smash hit in a time when trap music was running the charts. Why?.... because of Kendricks songwriting ability. He just understands song writing on a level deeper than most rappers, including Nas. He understands Cadence. Pitch. Tempo. Key. Melodies.
He's obviously studied music and songwriting on a serious level because he always performs on every single beat perfectly. He's not just going in the booth and rapping a hot 16, he's literally using his voice as an instrument and performing his verses according to the music that's playing.
So nah. Great songwriting isn't inherently commercial or does it need to top the charts. Even though they can be. But to me great songwriting is the ability to take a song that ISN'T commercial and still making it top the charts. And that's exactly what Kendrick has done time and time again. Nobody else woulda been able to take them "alright" and "not like us" beats and turn them into hits. Or humble. Or love. Even Luther. Kendrick turns these songs into hits because of he's a genius song writer. And he can still go right back and write a classic boom bap song. A classic funk song. A classic rnb song. A classic trap song.
Like I said. Hip-hop has never seen a song writer on the level of Kendrick and we never will again.
Those aren't better records either and I love those recordsI’m not talking about what’s the better records. I’m talking about actual verses and rapping. Point me to the rhymes kid. Heart Pt 6 closest shyt. Don’t change what this shyt is about.
Ain't nothing trap about the stuff they be giving Ross. All of those beats sound plush and luxurious. You want to hear 50 year old lyricists on trap beats?
two posts in three yearsTo me it is even worse than Nastradamus.
just like matrix 4 they shouldnt have done "ny state of mind pt 3".
production wise album is a dissapointment.

Dudes here acting perplexed when someone ranks this higher than KD2. Lol
Nas' rap performance here>>>KD2.
I personally feel Nas was on cruise control on several tracks on KD2 which is why I rank it slightly lower, even if the production was better.
Best 9 songs on LY are just as good, if not better, than Magic. Some of you dudes, for some odd reason, can't even see that.
KD3 still reigns supreme among all of them, though.
And yes, he's a better writer than your favorite MC. It's not even debatable.
“Cruise control” isn’t the right term. Nas was rapping his ass off on Rare, EMPD 2, Store Run, and Count Me In.
KD2 is more of a “song writer’s” album than a display of world class lyricism. Actually i’d say both KD1 and KD2 are examples of Nas evolution as a top tier song writer. Listening to songs like Death Row East, Moments, and Brunch on Sundays are some of Nas most enjoyable performances in my opinion, and not because he barred out, but because of the stories, the quotables, the feelings Nas evokes with his words.
