And @L. Deezy knows better... “The Listening” is a classic . Stop playin

Minstrel show borders classic, IMO but I know that’s not a popular opinion .
I don't think it's that unpopular. Source originally wanted to give it 5 mics. It was the only album during Scratch Magazine's run to get a perfect score.

Even a lot of people that like The Listening more are up front that they think The Minstrel Show is better all around, but that it just doesn't hold the same special place in their heart. If The Listening hit you at a certain point in your life it's one of your favorite albums of all time. But even the biggest Listening fans I don't thin would argue too much that all 3 members ad leveled up significantly on Minstrel Show. Phonte was a better emcee and sing-writer. Pooh was a better emcee. 9th was a better producer. The album was mixed by Young Guru and sounded cleaner. It was an improved album, but it just wasn't the same breath of fresh air because it wasn't the 1st album.

Minstrel Show has some dated references (especially on the skits) because it dropped it such a specific time period in hip-hop that didn't last long, but song for song it has no skippers. So that has to count for something.

No doubt.

I do remember thinking the beats on God's Son sounded a little more subdued and maybe not as exciting as IWW, I Am, Stillmatic, or Lost Tapes.

But yeah...in that early 2000's era, I thought almost every beat on Stillmatic and Lost Tapes were fire as fukk.

People definitely hated on IWW though. Heads at the time looked at it as a super commercial album. @Piff Perkins is right. I mean today If I Ruled The World would be considered a boom-bap/traditional hip-hop joint. But at the time it was considered more of a pop song. And die hard Illmatic fans didn't like all the Trackmasters (and even to some extend the Dr. Dre) stuff.

Also, it's important to remember that De La Soul dropped Stakes Is High on THE SAME DAY as It Was Written. So there was definitely a split in the community, and IMO this was the beginning of the split of the "mainstream" and "underground" hip-hop lanes. It Was Written maybe wasn't seen as a sellout album, but it was NOT viewed as a diehard traditional hip-hop album, especially dropping the same day as De La.
Fam I don’t know where u from or where u lived. Nas IWW was banging out every whip and sonically didn’t even sound much different than what was poppin in the streets at the time. Even the arguments about it was bullshyt. For instance. He went mafioso. Like nikkas ain’t pay NO attention to his features for 2 years leading up to the album. If I Ruled The World was hip hop as fukk. It sampled Whodini and had Lauryn on the hook. Biggie had more commercial shyt than that up until that point. Even on Ready To Die. All them Illmatic purist ain’t even fukking BUY Illmatic when it dropped. They bootlegged it. And then he got snubbed for the more commercial artist by the same publication for every award. nikkas need to blame themselves. And IWW had beats by Trackmasters. It also had beats by Havoc, Stretch from Live Squad, Premo, LES. Etc etc. Some of nikkas favorite tracks was produced by Trackmasters, such as The Message and Affirmative Action. And that album was blazing in the streets I don’t know where u from. Street nikkas LOVED IWW.

Already praised it in here but the Cure is fukkin ridiculous. Every line is a quotable.

On the beat thing, what pisses me off about it is it has become a standard trope to say when people talk about Nas. ‘Oh he picks wack beats’. And 90% of the people who say it don’t even know his catalogue. I’ve already seen reviews and YouTube reaction vids mention it. It’s just become a standard thing to seem knowledgable on Nas’ career.

its fine to say you don’t like Nas’ beat selections if you know his catalogue but lot that say it don’t have the knowledge to back it up
Exactly. nikkas can’t name an album after Illmatic and be talkin that dumb shyt.

I never said I thought IWW was a commercial or a sellout album. :hubie: It's the album that made me a big Nas fan. I was too young to catch Illmatic when it dropped.

I'm just saying that I've talked with a lot of older heads and people that were old enough to catch Illmatic and then IWW, that were either letdown on some level by IWW or knew people that were.

I was just saying it's not a crazy take by @Piff Perkins and there is some history to back up what he's saying. Personally I love IWW and every year I find myself enjoying it more and more. I probably play IWW, Lost Tapes, and Stillmatic more than Illmatic to be honest. :manny:

Illmatic is more of a time piece album to me at this point in my life. I can't just listen to it anytime.

He said some shyt like Jay is his number 1 and Nas is cool but in his opinion nobody is fukking with Hov
It was way more than that. He was on some shyt like it’s a FACT Jay is better and people have opinions n all kinda shyt. And brought Nas into it when he didn’t even have to.

His take was about “bad beats” when it comes to IWW. And I’m telling him that wasn’t even the argument for that album. It was the “selling out” that was the issue.
