If you go with real hiphop/lyricism/story-telling, you're going to upset mainstream viewers. If you go with mainstream, you're going to upset other fans.

There's way too much music out there that's super popular. They just need to create additional categories under rap music to be honest,

Never thought I'd see the day when it would be necessary to have an award category for modern Hip Hop and an additional award for contemporary Hip Hop.

@Art Barr what do you think breh? I always appreciate your old school insight. Should there be an award for modern and contemporary Hip Hop? Cuz it looks like the modernist crowd was catered to this year with the nominees being Nas, Royce, Freddie, Jay Elect, etc.. Meanwhile folks are mad that Lil Baby, Da Baby, Pop Smoke, etc., weren't nominated.

I feel like we're back at Boot Camp, Nas, Roots, etc., vs Bad Boy, or the traditional East Coast sound heads at odds with a burgeoning West Coast and South all over again.

12 Thoughts on the 2021 Grammy Nominations

Real Hip-Hop… and a Netflix Reality Show Winner

Best Rap Albums has a shortlist of nominees so puzzling that it makes you question what the category’s criteria are. Though it’s great to see albums like Freddie Gibbs and Alchemist’s joint album Alfredo and Jay Electronica’s long-awaited debut A Written Testimony get their shine, Nas’ King’s Disease and Royce 5’9”’s The Allegory hardly moved the needle for most rap fans born after Illmatic. Ultimately, the one true newcomer who received a nod was Rhythm + Flow winner and Kendrick Lamar soundalike D Smoke—a decision that slightly cheapens the whole category.

I was surprised RTJ4 wasnt nominated. I wasnt a fan of Jay elects so I woulda either went with RTJ or The Games album over that. I think the grammys got it close to right though. They went critical acclaim for album of year. The more popular acts still got thier shine in other catagories. I dont see the issue.

Is Em irrelevent in the mainstream now? Not a single nom. Funny thing is MTBMB was super dope and woulda been much more deserving then some of his more recent noms.

Em dissed the Grammys and doesn’t want anything to do with them.

It makes sense too. They segment other genres into different categories based on eras. I wouldn’t mind seeing it for hip hop. Have hip hop and then adult contemporary hip hop or something. There’s enough quality in both realms for no shortage.

Pitchfork is goofy as fukk. They’re way too far removed from what is or isn’t “moving the needle” to even speak on it.

I agree on all fronts. He's made some great music. Can't front on him. I don't think his recent work is that noteworthy

He's best friends with Young Guru, who was on twitter/IG for weeks dapping Nas' album, so maybe they had a debate or conversation lol.
I don’t think his recent work is crazy noteworthy either, but I mean the guy does teach at Duke and Harvard. 9th is good (intentional or otherwise) at having solid placements just often enough on the right big albums. He’s won a couple of Grammy’s for both hip hop and also R&B. He’s able to speak on mainstream stuff without sounding crazy out of touch, and he’s always produced consistently in the underground, and so he has some validity there.

I’m not saying he’s some massive influencer. But he’s been around long enough and worked with enough people to be considered a veteran that’s paid his dues. He also endeared himself to the veterans of his day by doing that boom bap sound in an era where it wasn’t hot at all.

Ultimately I think we’re largely saying the same things and I’m just more in the weeds
