If D Smoke loses Best New Artist (which i’m thinking he will to Meg) then he won’t win Best Rap Album.

Traditionally Rap Album Of The Year either goes to the artist with the highest sales or biggest name recognition. Nas has both the name recognition and for the first time in his 13 nominations, his album is the biggest seller of all the nominees. It SHOULD be a shoo in for Nas. Jay Electronica is the biggest threat because of Roc Nation and the Jay-z feature. But even the Jay-Z stimulus is flimsy as Jay’s name is literally no where on the album. Not even as a feature on the tracklist. So its not like he’ll get name checked.

If D Smoke wins then the shyt was 100% rigged. Damn near NOBODY knew who he was before the nominations except hardcore hip hoppers like us. And even then I didn’t even know he had an album out. He doesn’t even have a Metacritic score so it can’t be said his album was super acclaimed next to Gibbs (88%) Jay Elect (83%) or Nas (73%)

dont put to much trust in these people my boy, these people can pull anything. And the fact thats hes nominated should tell you the politricks these people pull.

nobody really messed with his stuff correct but that speaks to what i am saying, given that despite what you said which is true hes nominated here and not other acts who were more talked about than him.

Several points

1. It is cute seeing the radio pop fans all in a tizzy regarding their favorites' complete shutout from the nominations for best rap album. I have never heard this level of bytching from fans of less commercial artists come Grammy season, it's been accepted that this ain't the stage usually for that.

2. It's kind of insulting to hear these same commercial artists (along with members of their entourage) insinuate or blatantly state that the noms aren't "representative of the culture". What the fukk? Imagine Vanilla Ice saying... You know what I'm not even gonna go there

3. I do agree that hip-hop is a wide umbrella now and the awards going forward should reflect that. So split the awards into two. Have one award focusing on what gets radio play amongst the PAWGs in Southern California. Drake can run up his Grammys in that category. Have one award focusing on actual artistic quality, regardless of commercial impact. Grade the raps, the beats, the melodies, the breadth and depth of topics. This really doesn't have to be an old vs young thing. Kendrick and Cole have released excellent albums from a critical perspective. And DAMN would be up for noms in both categories, as an example.

4. It is refreshing to see Nas and Royce and Gibbs and Jay Elect get their shine on the big screen.

I’m pretty sure Nas doesn’t know who 9th Wonder is :yeshrug:

Esco got a special gift of getting grown men in their feelings without saying anything :mjlol:
It's funnier because he does know. Nas got asked in an early 2003 Source mag interview if he'd heard God's Stepson and he talked a little bit about it.

There's a video of 9th playing one of the beats he sent Nas after he got "The Nas call" and they actually did a joint for Distant Relatives that got left on the cutting room floor.

There's been a lot of opportunities but it never happened like @Ziggiy said

Amazing talent but such a bytch ass nikka.
"I didn't want to list all the names" breh you listed 4 out of 6.
I mean right, it would've been like 10 Mississippi, tops, to just @ the other names. I do think 9th is a huge fan of Hit-Boy and I know he's a big Alc fan. But leaving @NaS off is literally just 4 characters. :heh:

Happily repped this post. Every point is hard-hitting.

Re: the points.

1. It really is crazy, right? Hardly any "more traditional/contemporary" artists or their fans get annoyed at the Grammy's. We know the deal. It's been crazy watching the more pop rap crowd flip out.

2. Absolutely. The irony of the people suddenly acting like they're the gatekeepers of "the culture" is ironic to say the least.

3. They already have a Melodic Rap Song of the Year category, right? Do you think they should just leave that one and expand it to Melodic Rap Album of the Year? Or do you think they should just split the album of the year categories into "adult contemporary hip-hop AOTY" and "rap AOTY" (although parsing the difference could get weird.)

They should 100% split the rap album categories. EVERY popular genre has done this (Pop, Rock, R&B) and Rap outsells them all. Best Contemporary Rap Album and Best Traditional Hip Hop Album. This would solve the issue.

Rap HAS evolved to the point where the need to split the categories is imperative. Especially if artists who still put an emphasis on lyrics and album structure are to be recognized and rewarded for their work. This could open up a door for underrated rappers like Elzhi, Cormega, Black Thought, Pusha T, etc) to get shine whilst the autotune, Drill, and trap nikkas can get recognition as well for what they do

No doubt. Also, if they don't do it, this problem could get way worse. I think this year the pandemic accelerated an already growing trend. Older rappers have been making more and more music than ever before. The idea of "old rappers being cool" has gotten more and more prevalent over the last fe year; right now with Covid, and no live touring, all these artists are stuck at home and making music. I think that's a huge reason there's been like 4-6 quality drops every week, throughout this entire pandemic.

Even when life becomes more normal, I still think there will be a lot more recording going on. More releases means more quality. More quality means more stuff is going to get overlooked by any institution that gives awards or recognizes strong artistry. I would love to see people like the ones you named get more love. I'd also love to see a hip-hop producer of the year category.

Not really considering he called the Grammy committee out on their BS nomination policy and pretty much told them to leave his name out of their mouth.

Easy to do that after he had already won though......same Kanye attention seeking rebel tactics!! :martin::skip:
