Jobs like fast food, retail, etc. are not comparable to traditional "office"/corporate jobs in term of (a) responsibility (b) skill level required (c) output.
Yes, A desk job maybe physically "easy", but if I'm working for a security firm and I fukk up some small shyt on some paperwork, I could potentially run a lot of risks for my company and whatever companies that employ our services, perhaps in the hundred thousands to millions of dollar range and ample time has to be spent to fix that. In the name of taking on that pressure and responsibility, I am given higher pay. You fukk up a burger at McDonalds, nothing is really lost. The store probably loses less than 50 cent on a messed up burger and practically no time since fast food places like McDonalds premake most of their food and have it made already, maybe 2-3 minutes lost at most. I have a very good friend who works fast food we talk often about how different it is from corporate to fast food. His fast food gig is virtually no responsibility at all and he acknowledges the difference on a corporate level. Low risk, low reward situation.
Also, when you also look at the way the world economy is shifting, basically encouraging people low skill jobs instead of training for higher skilled ones will not make us competitive in the global market.
Y'all are acting like there's not a difference, but there is: You make a computer program, you have created a business solution that can be used at multiple companies in different ways to help them solve their problem. You make a burger from McDonalds, it is probably made wrong + have given someone the shyts. Y'all seriously think that is the same though?
It reminds me of the movie Idiocracy. There's no need for education or to be educated because even the dumbest people are able to have money in abundance though they contribute relatively nothing to society but (wrongly) consumed products (fattening burgers and fries). Because of it, society grows stagnant and actually very stupid with very low output.
Plus, I find it hard to believe that most of the people working at McDonalds do so because they want to, but more so because they had to. It has been a tough time for jobs. A lot of them probably expect more pay because of a previous job they held (Let's be reality, fast food is a job for teenagers, released convicts, and older people who just want to get out the house). Why not push to create more jobs, which is again, something that benefits EVERYONE, without shifting the way the economy functions. Throwing them $15 is a lazy solution that still does not solve the problem, just puts a band-aid over it. The salary market was great at one point because you had an ABUNDANCE of jobs and it was an employee's market. Now it's an employers market and this is what's happening. Y'all probably think it's cool to throw $15 an hour at grown adults who still will have no savings, no retirement plan, shytty healthcare, etc.
I am not 100% against $15/hour for fast food workers, but I don't think it will really solve anything and I think there are a plethora of better solutions that actually will fix things. Upping everyone's wage will definitely give people more money to spend, but if I am a business owner and I know that you know have more money, chances are I'm going to charge you more for the same product to take advantage of such anyway. That's a quick win, but long term loss solution to me.
