fukk, why I even bother? This is why you can't have reasonable conversations with dyed-in-the-wool dikkriders. Here I am, a diehard Wu-stan with a Ghost avatar who loves and reveres their music, but because I consider Enter the Wu-Tang and Cuban Linx classic, but don't consider Liquid Swords, SC, Ironman and other various Wu albums classics, I'm high, I live on another planet, my opinion is trash, I should be banned from talking about hip-hop, etc.
No, Ironman, SC, LS, and Forever are not classics to me, sorry. Great albums, yes. All time great albums, even. On a 5 point scale, I would rate them all 4.5. I just don't think every dope ass impactful album should be labeled a classic, and I only think there are about 30 in the entire history of rap if that deserve to be called classics.
Is calling SC, LS, and Ironman classics a RESPECTABLE opinion? Of course...all 3 of them. But they are NOT indisputable classics. shyt, I remember a lot of Wu fans couldn't quite vibe with LS because they thought it was a little too cerebral and not rugged enough. iIllmatic, The Infamous, and Cuban Linx dropped in succession and they were all indisputable classics. LS and Ironman dropped later and they were awesome, but they were not as good as the 3 albums I just named clearly. Everybody wants to retroactively don albums they loved in their youth as a classic. I don't want to give in to that temptation. Ironman and Liquid Swords were not universally hailed as classics when they came out. They were banging ass albums that got a lot of play, of course.
ATCQ's first 2 albums were groundbreaking shyt never done before in hip-hop. MM was of the highest quality as well. De La's first 2, forget about it. They've somehow become the most overlooked legendary group ever (you could argue EPMD) as well. They changed the entire scope and identifiability of what people considered an emcee to be with their first album. Then they eschewed the hippie shyt that they were labeled with and took it to another level with an even better follow-up album. Black Sheep dropped a brilliant debut album that was like a funny, thoughtful and more down to earth progression of what ATCQ and De La already did. They were a one album wonder, but that one album was a masterpiece.
It's okay to disagree. MM and Black Sheep are disputable. The first and second Tribe and the first and second De La are in the Cuban Linx/Infamous/Illmatic category of indisputable classics.
