The NBA will be fine. They just need to pivot from the "Face of the League" formula especially taking into the account we're currently in the era of true parity. Jordan was a once in a lifetime athlete/personality with a storybook career that benefited from a diluted era and we'll never get a more polarizing star than LeBron where millions of fans/haters literally tune into his games to either see him win or fail.

My personal suggestions.

  • Find a way to market the league more to women like the NFL or F1 have done.
  • Presentation is way too juvenile. Pander more to older and middle aged men. Ease up on modern Hip Hop and the YN cosplay.
  • Give the more wholesome players with a family friendly image bigger pushes.
  • Promote the name on the front instead of the one on the back more.
  • Create more storylines so casuals can get invested rather than "What does this mean for LeBron's legacy" discourse in 2025.
  • Get rid of the buffoons and hot take artists who are a stain on the sport. Replace with respected, intelligent and articulate men to promote the game.

It always been about stars. It’s hard to put that genie back in the bottle after 60 or so years.
No it hasn't.
NBA was about teams before the 80s.
Stern shifted to individual stars with Magic vs Bird, before that it was about teams and tradition, but they took a big hit in the 70s with some very public drug usage issues and then the ABA took them to the edge as well.

Magic and Bird saved the league.
Focusing on MJ in the late 80s and 90s, during the rise of global mass media took them to the global next level.
That said NBA only has been focused on star players in marketing since the 80s, not since its inception.

It is easy to put back in the bottle, you just have to make it a priority in marketing to start emphasizing the history and heritage of the teams, not the individual "rings" and performances of the individual.

the NBA is the only league where they have teams that fans feel are bad for business.

And yet we want 2 more teams in a talent pool that isn't deep.

That’s the larger point

Why do these teams even exist if it’s “bad” for the league for them to be good :skip:

Is the argument that certain teams need to be a permanent underclass in order for the league to thrive at a certain level?

Where do you get the "we"
I notice a lot of you folks say "we" when you mean "I"

I personally and others I know have been complaining about the NBA having too many teams since the 90s expansion.
Memphis, Orlando, Bobcats/Hornets, and Pelicans, Raptors, and Hawks need to be contracted.
They can just move Dallas to Vegas.
You instantally have a better league.

The issue is the owners of the NBA like expansion because it amounts to money coming in for them.

So Wilt versus Russell wasn’t a thing?

No, it wasn't marketed at that.
It was the Boston Celtic dynasty, and when Wilf was with philly, it was the Boston - Philly rivalry, led by...
When wilt was with Golden State it wasn't really a rivalry but the Warriors won the title, and etc.

Believe it or not I don't want expansion. However, basketball fans and media are dying for a team preferably in Seattle and Las Vegas without getting rid of anything. We can forget about relocating. That's a losing battle. Would some fans rather see a couple of teams move to fill Seattle and Vegas? If they could, but you listed 8 teams to shutter or move. Never happening. That's embracing the belief that your league is failing miserably.
