To pimp a butterfly and damn were both try hard deep shyt. GKMC is a classic but he hasnt released anything that resonated with the streets and youth since except a few singles.

I agree that it was modern, but it wasn’t as commercial as DAMN.

I agree I’m just saying to an average rap listener GKMC was more what they were used to, it’s an easier listen

DAMN was sonically way more creative than GKMC, that’s what I like about Kendrick tho, he does different stuff

GKMC was his most accessible project, came out late 2012 and bled into 2013, i was in like 7th-8th grade during that time and Kendrick was HUGE to everyone

TPAB was too different for mainstream listeners, it had acclaim and real fans loved it but the casuals ain’t rock with it

Edit: and Cole ain’t become a phenom til FHD came out, EVERYONE hopped on that bandwagon and he’s been going strong since
nah the bangwagon started after friday night lights

That was light tho, after FHD people who I never even heard mention Cole was on that “J. Cole is too smart for people” “he’s the best rapper ever” wave :mjlol:

He became apart of that “he talks about real life and is so deep” crowd
