what do they have to do with anything
shaq in orlando proves my point
kobe wasnt drafted in top 10
spurs had a nightmare season of injuries the season before and ended up getting duncan (boston had been tanking and failed)

You espoused superstars coming into sucky teams and the "slow build". The majority of superstars did not win titles that way including the most successful ones in recent memory so you basically like seeing superstars toil in mediocrity, carrying bums or leaving for greener pastures because thats what usually happens with the "slow build".

Orlando quickly grew into a title contender because they had back to back number 1 picks despite winning 40 games Shaq's rookie year (almost impossible today...it's actually the reason for that) and then they lost Shaq to an LA team that outbid them (can't happen today). Kobe was a HS player before they were known commodities and that's not an option today. That wasn't even the point, the point is that if he doesn't end up in LA rather than some sucky squad, his chances of being as successful as he's been teamwise are severely diminished. Spurs were lucky the Robinson goes down the year Duncan is available but they still had Robinson coming back and Pop on deck. In short, these slow builds don't exist and building a champion generally requires having a nice foundation in place to add the superstar to rather than building on a superstars back which has only happened one time (Jordan).

This is my point breh. Only superstars can take a mediocre team over the top. Small market mediocre teams only hope of getting a superstar is through the draft. Their chances of getting that superstar are almost non existent under the current system. Being mediocre is worst than being good and thusly teams have no real reason to at least try to be decent if they aren't competing for championships.

I get you now. That's why I am not as against as other "solutions" (especially since if shyt works out with the Sixers and we back to our normal 7th to 13 pick finishes...we might luck out...) but I do worry about small market teams that suck balls and end up with the worth record legit and then fall to 7th and miss out on that superstar tho.

I have no problem with a lottery system, but it should also include playoff teams. Help keep competitive balance by allowing every team a shot. As long as teams are competing throughout the year, you will always find some star/superstar player that will say "I'm good enough that I can take that team over the top".

The way the NBA is, right now, it doesn't matter if you're a bottom feeder anyway, because you're drafting based on potential, and in 4yrs when they're able to contribute, you're draftee is leaving anyway.

Thing is under the one proposal every team non playoff squad has an equal shot so it wouldn't really be that bad.

Damn I never thought about the impact this change would have on small market teams. It is true though, the draft is the only way for small market cities to get a star player.

I was all for the NBA changing the draft lottery until I read that. Just keep the lottery the way it is.

It would be more exciting to see a team like the suns who's a franchise player away from contending get the 1st pick then some lousy rebuilding team that won't be competitive for 5 more years and will waste away a players prime..like when the magic won it two years in a row and got Shaq and penny and became contenders

In today's nba if you're not a contender you're only way to get there is to be awful..trying to be ok first and competitive will get you stuck in nba purgatory

The suns were a great story last year but in reality they're screwed for overachieving because they still have no franchise player and will probably be stuck as a mid or lower tier playoff team for awhile
