I have an extra HD (1 TB) that I was going to convert to an external. Couldn't I just swap that with the old one install Snow Leopard and upgrade to Mountain Lion afterwards?
You could do that as well. Just skip the snow leopard part unless you have a SN disc

luckily, Apple sells Snow Leopard for under $20.00 I ordered a copy and will arrive Thursday. Clean install on the new HD and will immediately upgrade to Mountain Lion
