I have a theory.

All eyes were on St. Louis due to the RAMS winning the Super Bowl in 1999. First championship since 1951.That brought up the morale of the whole city. I was stationed in Missouri back then, Missouri as a whole was hyped the fukk up period, then Nelly came in and rode the wave with good music.

Main reason for his success is simple: his music and image got him over in a major way with white girls aged 14-21 and they buy more records than just about any demographic. Give him credit for understanding melodies and pop songwriting but as soon as that demographic moved on to the next trend his career was over.
