He garners respect because he's a top 10 point guard of all time and one of the biggest names from the 2000sYou literally just said Magic Johnson got a front office job off name recognition and franchise loyalty even though he had zero experience and was totally unqualified. NBA teams bringing in dudes close to the game but who never had direct experience in the job is so common. You can literally say the same about Timmy getting an assistant coach gig.
Rivers
Zeke
Jackson
Kidd
Fisher.
And it's not like Nash has had ZERO experience; he's been a player consultant for the last few years with the Warriors, and has worked-out with players for the last half a decade. As it's been reiterated throughout this thread - I'd imagine it's one of the reasons why he landed this job because of the rapport he's built with Durant, both as a mentor and helping him develop his game.
Not a minute of coaching or front office experience and hes getting to coach a finals contender??![]()
I will say the perception around black coaches in the league is interesting. Coaches like Ty Lue, Nate McMillan, Jacque Vaughn, etc. are good at the X's and O's but garner reputations for only being players coaches. Dwane Casey and Mark Jackson getting replaced and their respective teams winning championships a year later also brought a perception of black coaches having a ceiling as opposed to the "real geniuses" like Pop, Nick Nurse, Steve Kerr, Brad Stevens, Mike Budenholzer. They didn't even give Spo his flowers until recently.
IIRC all of those squads were lottery teams and did not have a player the caliber of Kyrie, let alone KD, let alone both of them. Those guys didn't just waltz into contenders. I wasn't talking about just getting a coaching job, I was talking about getting THIS kind of coaching job.

Definitely the most WTF moment in sports in 2020![]()
