He garners respect because he's a top 10 point guard of all time and one of the biggest names from the 2000s :russ: You literally just said Magic Johnson got a front office job off name recognition and franchise loyalty even though he had zero experience and was totally unqualified. NBA teams bringing in dudes close to the game but who never had direct experience in the job is so common. You can literally say the same about Timmy getting an assistant coach gig.

If it was the Suns and he was just tossed out there at the end of the season or brought in as an assistant I would get it.

Rivers
Zeke
Jackson
Kidd
Fisher.

And it's not like Nash has had ZERO experience; he's been a player consultant for the last few years with the Warriors, and has worked-out with players for the last half a decade. As it's been reiterated throughout this thread - I'd imagine it's one of the reasons why he landed this job because of the rapport he's built with Durant, both as a mentor and helping him develop his game.

IIRC all of those squads were lottery teams and did not have a player the caliber of Kyrie, let alone KD, let alone both of them. Those guys didn't just waltz into contenders. I wasn't talking about just getting a coaching job, I was talking about getting THIS kind of coaching job.

I will say the perception around black coaches in the league is interesting. Coaches like Ty Lue, Nate McMillan, Jacque Vaughn, etc. are good at the X's and O's but garner reputations for only being players coaches. Dwane Casey and Mark Jackson getting replaced and their respective teams winning championships a year later also brought a perception of black coaches having a ceiling as opposed to the "real geniuses" like Pop, Nick Nurse, Steve Kerr, Brad Stevens, Mike Budenholzer. They didn't even give Spo his flowers until recently.

It’s gonna take some bold franchises to hire and stick with Black coaches. I feel like it’s bound to happen sooner or later but we need a Black coach or two to win big.

But I like that players are getting into coaching in general. It helps to have some new minds. If any of them are good it makes the job easier for front offices.

This kind of coaching job required someone that had the trust of Marks (he and Nash have a 20-year relationship - on/off the court), and what would be the most important factor, of all, the co-signing of both Durant and Kyrie. Aside from Pop, there really isn't anyone in any basketball circle that would fit that description. Durant and Kyrie have the most polarizing and mercurial temperaments of any superstars in recent memory, and they're on the SAME team - it's going to take a certain type of personality to be able to harness a lockerroom with both of them in it.

You can't look at this as if it's a coaching job with two Tim Duncan-types on the team. If you have someone there that can't handle Durant and Kyrie, what's the point?

I mean there aren't many people that Durant has spoken this highly of:

"He's someone I can talk to about anything and somebody I really respect. His basketball mind is probably the best I've been around," Durant told the San Jose Mercury News in 2018. "He tries to simplify the game and keep me conscious of those things as well. It's simplifying and keeping it as easy for yourself. I've learned so much. So many people taught me how to play. He's continued to teach me different things I can put in my game. I'm very grateful for him and happy for him."

And I believe Nash was the last one (or one of) he called before making his decision to go the Warriors back in 2016.

favorite player of all time

yall about to learn real quick what Steve Nash is about
you're bringing leadership, chemistry and drills to the team
and the largest piece in this era's influence on offense and playsets
pretend like a dude that didnt run record breaking offenses for over a decade isnt good at coaching brehs
you giving credit to D'antoni instead? nah, I've seen those threads... it cant be made you look, if its gonna be one love.

:banderas:

then you pair that with KD ... and Steve has the same moxy as Kyrie from a logic standpoint... this is a great fit
Nash has connections with too much shyt AND he can use the smooth talk shyt he does, to keep BK under control

I dont think yall really know or watched Nash like that, he blends perfect with Kyrie and KD's mindset... that's why KD has been around him for the past 5 years
