At this point man, I honestly think you're more of a fan of the overall product Kendrick and his team put out than K. Dot himself. I get that you dig the sound. That is what causes the discrepancy. I listened to this and liked it, but if this is what makes you the best rapper then a lot of spoken word people have a similar claim. It was a dope performance, but at some point we have to decide what makes an emcee great and not switch that depending on the person. When Wale does this ish he gets made fun of. Kendrick does it and he's a rap savant. I'm so confused.

I think the product is inseparable from the artist himself.

And are there any examples of Wale doing something like this on this level? Everytime somebody says something like "if X would have done this" for any artist they always just say it and never go any deeper. It comes off as just being mad that your guy isn't getting the same shine.
That performance is what a live instrumentation and live performance version of Wale's the God Smile would feel like...even down to the flow switches.

Second, of course the product is separable from the artist when we are the discussing the artist's individual merits. You can have a dope producing team and have a mediocre voice. You can be a great emcee but choose horrible production, etc. Obviously, Kendrick is very hands-on with his work and is a part of this process, but on a general level, my point was about the "sounds" he's using. It's the same way I love stuff like this:

But he's not a better rapper than Eminem who doesn't rap over stuff like that.

Come on man, these cliches? That performance is what a live instrumentation and live performance version of the God Smile would feel like.

nikka did you like the song or not.

if this was the cali poster you'd be giving daps and supportive remarks byt when it's a loved and established artist you have a lot of criticism which to me says you have trouble separating music from fans
