The Source stayed rating west albums on par with east and putting them on the cover. Radio always played local artists more. Ice T used to get played on red alert all the time though.

I forgot how bad Masta Ace mocked the super gangster on 'slaughtahouse' though. That shyt was genius level parody though.

Bottom line, an E 40 record won't play in NYC the way a Showbiz & AG record won't play in Oakland. It's regional stuff. The source gave both 4 mics but E 40 actually sold some records.

A DJ Quik record won't play the way a Smif N Wessun record won't play. It is what it is.

Difference is Quik. And E40 were platinum artists who couldnt even get spins in New York. I have a Mack 10 DVD were they showed Westside Connection album goin double platinum but was getting no spins in New York gettin spins in all the other states tho. Smif and Wesson were local they were not platinum artists like Quik and 40. AG ain't never sold no records he was local to.

and im telling you thats because Quik & 40's sound was too regional. it wouldnt have resonated on ny radio.

black moon, jeru, gang starr....i doubt they were getting spun on la radio. regardless of them not selling tons of records they were the 'now' sound of nyc at the time.

Illmatic is a great example.

To me Tony Toni Tone started the East Coast vs. West Coast beef with the song It Never Rains In Southeren California. It had the greatest diss line ever in a song and it being R&B. imagine riding a subway cold as hell and raining listening to music and this song comes on.
They are the ones who started using "the other side of town", which meant the other coast and which rappers adopted the line in there verses such as 2Pac, Rick Ross, Jim Jones etc...

your right about that. i heard they tried to do that song when it was hot at the apollo and got booed.

but even before that back in 88/89 Bobby Jimmy was talking about how the east didnt like the west because they didnt have a new york accent.

And as for bobby jimmy...the black weird al yankovich, it's human nature to hate on things foreign to you. It takes an NWA or Snoop to bullyfoot it way into acceptance.

The boroughs have warred for ducks sake. You guys kill eachother over sets. shyt is tribal.

yup radio was playin a lot of east coast music back then. from Black Moon "gotcha open,"what you want nine?" and even that song "when the east is in the house" that song made KD from lynch mobb say "when the west is in the house" on the WSC album. when the west was killing the charts they still felt the hiphop love was missing.

i understand people calling Bobby Jimmy wack lol but it was other rappers that was put in the same box as him that had real talent.

Like who? Dream Team? Egyptian Lover?

Maybe Short got clowned for being simplistic but he also had lots of fans in NY.

Quik kinda fell off on Way 2 Fonkay with all those played funk loops and was reduced to the rest of the country.
