For what it's worth, Football Outsiders says Emmitt was a Top 5 back from 1991-1995, and 1998-1999, so 7 years of his career (46.7%) they are saying he was elite. And for 4 years, 1992-1995 (26.7%), they rate him as the best back in the NFL...

I'm not sure the stock someone should put in analytics-driven football though, because they only say Peterson was a Top 5 running back in '07 and '12 and only the best running back in '12...

False

That’s a misconception. Barry had pretty much a good line his whole career. 2 pro bowlers in Glover & Brown. Mike Compton was solid too. He never had a trash line ever
From Reddit

DVOA for 1997 shows they were about average but open field rank and 2nd level they were 1st which is RB dependent... which means Barry was a beast.

Their adjusted line yards were 4.11 ypc... but RB yards was 5.83. That's insane how much of a difference just having Barry back there was.

In 98 they were one of the worst run blocking lines in the NFL (29th) but Barry still ran for 1491 yard...down from his 2k yard season in 97 behind an average line.

I watched the games. Barry was a hard dude to block for. A lot of times he freestyled. I watched literally every game from 91’ up to his retirement. Now I will admit the last couple years the line was mediocre. But I wouldn’t say it was terrible

Barry made those guys Pro Bowlers. Anyone who watched him live knows how often he turned water into wine or a good gain into a big gain.

Of course I'm biased, but he's the best I've ever seen. Peterson is number two on my list. LeSean McCoy is the closest I've seen to Barry in terms of moves.

I'm older and I watched Barry too. At best the line was average to me. Maybe I overstepped saying terrible but he woulda broke all the records w the Dallas line

I'm so tired of hearing the offensive line made Emmitt Smith. :camby:

Larry Allen came after Emmitt had already won 3 consecutive rushing titles. None of the other dudes on the line ever made a Pro Bowl until Emmitt got there. Dallas didn't have a 1,000 yard rusher the year before Emmitt arrived or the year after Emmitt left for Arizona.

Both Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smith only played with ONE Hall of Fame lineman. This narrative that Barry's line was trash needs to die. Barry played with multiple pro bowlers on the line.

Also why is longevity and teammates held against Emmitt but not Jerry RIce? fukk the double standards. Emmitt doesn't get the credit he deserved because he played for the Dallas Cowboys.

I'm gonna try and answer your question @murksiderock

What made Emmitt Smith so good was his patience and vision. He wasn't the fastest, biggest, or strongest but he knew when to hit the hole.

Emmitt Smith also had a nose for finding the endzone. So many times today we see teams fail to run the ball in from inside the redzone. If the Cowboys were down there, Emmitt was likely getting in the end zone. The object of the game is to score touchdowns. No running back scored more TDs.

Also, there's no better big game running back than Emmitt Smith. Go look at his numbers in big regular season games and the playoffs. He typically always showed up.

I'm not here to argue Emmitt versus other backs. Y'all can do that.

I don't want to post the links cause they are rare... But Mitchell & Ness definitely made them and they are still available out there. I already have his Bills jersey.. You can still find his USC jersey out there

You don't know that for a fact. Nobody in NFL history has more yards lost than Barry Sanders. Him and Emmitt are very different runners. I'm not knocking Barry to prop Emmitt either. I'm just sick and tired of the Emmitt Smith disrespect.
