According to the answers to my questions in this thread, Africans had more power than Europeans during the invasions of West Africa. African chiefs (correction "Africans" in general) are equally to blame as the whites looking to expand their global power. And, Europeans helped Africans by ending the slave trade.

I agree with Nick, but the issue also isn't that slavery didn't exist before. The nature of slavery prior to the transatlantic slave trade was completely different. Namely people weren't treated worse than animals, stripped of their families, tortured, etc. It was more forced indentured servitude and usually was the L you took for losing a war. People didn't just come and snatch you and make you a slave either, there was protocol.
So when certain African chiefs and rulers sold these prisoners of war into slavery they had an entire different concept in their mind than what the White men created. Doesn't make it right, but shifts the perspective a bit.
