Nintendo claims the new Zelda is "open-world". If so...

Not really, you still had to do dungeon in order and a lot of areas would be closed off until you get a certain item(s). The only real open word Zelda games were The OG Zelda on NES and A Link Between Worlds.
you can do ALttP out of order AFTER you get the hammer in darkworld

I don't consider it "open world" when there really isn't an option but to do the next specific main questline or one or two side quests. Skyward Sword was hardly open-world.

Either way, if they've always been considered "open-world", why do these games always get a pass for having so little overworld content?

:usure:

Zelda has always been driven by the story-line. Even with all the exploration available, the games have always had a linear progression. Nintendo stated yesterday that this new Zelda will not be the case. The game will be open and you can tackle whatever needs to be done in whatever order you see fit.I guess they are calling it open-world because they're trying to get rid of the linearity. Zelda games are forever purchased and played for story, so don't expect some wild Skyrim type video game when that's never been their formula.

They explained in the Digital Event that they didn't consider previous Zelda games to be open world because it was essentially just a large hub with linear paths leading to different separate levels (dungeons). The new Zelda is supposed to make the world as a whole more immersive.

Pretty much this.

Open world games in the vein of GTA get ripped because they don't have many buildings you can enter so you need more shyt to do in general. After awhile it just feels stale, this big world with like 1% of the buildings you seem being accessible.

That just doesn't happen with RPGs, look at Skyrim, big world with not much to do but since you had so many buildings you can enter it doesn't get judged the same way. Zelda will probably be like those, tons of dungeons and buildings to enter, it wont see the same criticism.
its not even so much that you cant enter the buildings in skyrim. theres just no point to, theres nothing ever in them worth to steal, i feel like skyrim didnt do the open world thing so well. Im an explorer when it comes to rpgs and i found a whole lot...........of nothing

RE: open worlds/limited access..That's why I've been hoping for a Sims style GTA-like game, as far as buildings/houses/apartments/jobs. How you can build a restaurant, hang-out, bar...whatever..place it down in the world, spawn NPCs...like in Open for Business, or assign positions to playable characters. Even if they just opened up the possibility for user-created content, they could put on a base world and let nature take its course.

What Skyrim did you play because I found a shyt ton of dungeons with power-ups, cursed weapons, Daedric Artifacts, and other quests. Game had so much to do I put in well over 100 hours before even going to see those Greyfukk nikkas, or doing the civil war...or even going to the Dark Brotherhood.
