open world games have levels. the quest structure moves you through game levels even if there are no finite barriers, GTA includedI thought Zelda was always open world.
There's never been separate levels to complete

you can do ALttP out of order AFTER you get the hammer in darkworldNot really, you still had to do dungeon in order and a lot of areas would be closed off until you get a certain item(s). The only real open word Zelda games were The OG Zelda on NES and A Link Between Worlds.

I don't consider it "open world" when there really isn't an option but to do the next specific main questline or one or two side quests. Skyward Sword was hardly open-world.
Either way, if they've always been considered "open-world", why do these games always get a pass for having so little overworld content?

They explained in the Digital Event that they didn't consider previous Zelda games to be open world because it was essentially just a large hub with linear paths leading to different separate levels (dungeons). The new Zelda is supposed to make the world as a whole more immersive.
its not even so much that you cant enter the buildings in skyrim. theres just no point to, theres nothing ever in them worth to steal, i feel like skyrim didnt do the open world thing so well. Im an explorer when it comes to rpgs and i found a whole lot...........of nothingOpen world games in the vein of GTA get ripped because they don't have many buildings you can enter so you need more shyt to do in general. After awhile it just feels stale, this big world with like 1% of the buildings you seem being accessible.
That just doesn't happen with RPGs, look at Skyrim, big world with not much to do but since you had so many buildings you can enter it doesn't get judged the same way. Zelda will probably be like those, tons of dungeons and buildings to enter, it wont see the same criticism.
This is the coli...Let's not let logic get in the way of this thread.
Fred.
But skyrim dungeons are the epitome of copy n pasteI'm willing to bet that Skyrim has more dungeons than any Zelda game released anytime recently. Not buying that argument.
Not really. They're diverse enough I think, and some of the stories behind them are cool. But skyrim dungeons are the epitome of copy n paste
You must not play many RPGsNot really. They're diverse enough I think, and some of the stories behind them are cool.

Obviously you know nothing of my gaming taste. You must not play many RPGs![]()

So skyrim doesn't have a ton of tombs/caves with the same ugly brown rock texture slathered throughout?Obviously you know nothing of my gaming taste.![]()

I dont get the infatuation with entering buildings
