I don't think Nintendo cares about investing into an online community and I think I have talked about it here before, but here is how I think Nintendo operates. Its mostly based on how they have ran the company forever.
They have 4 bulletproof franchises in Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Pokemon. They basically just have to use those characters in their own titles and other spinoff titles and are always guaranteed success...its been proven for 20+ years already. Why? Because its the same argument that I keep having with people as to which is the best Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, Metroid, and other games in their franchises - Your first is usually the one you hold closest to your chest. From the age of 5-13 or so there is your chance to experience your first GREAT Nintendo franchise and it will always remain a fond memory to you until you die. After that first great experience? They have hooked you forever...they eat off sales from people such as myself who won't buy a Nintendo console as their main gaming machine anymore, but will buy it to check out those 4 bulletproof franchises named above. They don't have to sell much to me or many people in my age group because chances are Mario 3 hooked us forever. I sometimes think Nintendo rather stay a small company instead of expanding...that might be their strategy at the end of the day. I just don't think they need hardware to do it anymore, why even risk it? They don't even make a profit off each Wii U sold at this point.
Sony or Microsoft will never have that space due to the games they develop. I think Sony and Naughty Dog had a possibility for a bulletproof franchise in Crash Bandicoot, but they threw that out the window and Activision doesn't seem interested in using Crash ANYWHERE these days...he is not even in PS All-Stars
