I don't think he's against a major deal. He said in the interview that he was close to signing with a major a few months back, but they didn't want to partner with him, they wanted to give him a check.

i wanted him to go a little more in depth about the Ross scenario, but im sure that was out of respect to Rick who still has people to answer to. that sounded interesting

You were planning to drop Victory Lap first, right? So now that’s gonna be an album instead?

Yeah. I’ma tell you about that. I was in negotiations with a few major labels and we were almost close to a deal. So I started promoting Victory Lap as a mixtape before my album, because I was gonna drop Victory Lap, announce my deal, and go into the album; but I realized that the structure of these companies aren’t built to give me any type of ownership. They wanna give you a check. I told them keep the check, give me an asset and just market and distribute my shyt. I don’t need a check. They wanted to give me all this money up front but I’m like, keep the money. Let me be involved as a partner. And nikkas couldn’t do that. And it’s not because the people at the label didn’t want to help me. It’s because the corporate structure of their companies would not allow ownership. And I’m offended by that. I called an audible and I withstood social pressure. I believed in my heart that I would be less of a man to not stand up for what I believed in. I felt like it was racist. Like, I don’t deserve some shyt I just built by myself? You want to give me some money? Oh, because you don’t think I know what the asset is? You think I don’t understand where the real value is? Well I’m offended by that and my goal changed. I didn’t do a press release or tell nobody about it. I just let my demonstration speak. And now they’ve seen the first part of it with the Crenshaw shyt. That’s just a small piece of what my plan is.

:salute:

Wow. Nipsey is that nikka. I'm glad to be witnessing his run right now.

You're over complicating his entire point. It's not about independent vs. major...it's about making money vs. retaining ownership (as in publishing and masters) - in which MOST artist don't own either.

I believe his rant is to inspire and not just be used in music but in general. He just happens to personally apply it to music because it's his chosen profession.

If that's what its about that pretty much makes it independent vs major imo. How many of these dudes got the kinda stats where they can walk into a major and prove they can SELL a bunch of albums to where they can demand ownership?Nipsey tellin people they can do it all by themselves is great and I cosign and have already heard that and knew that, and every rapper knows that already. But is not that easy to be in a position that Nipsey is in. And frankly he owes part of the position he is in,and the relationships he has,and his name recognition to being on a major first....some people gon have to be in a ho position to make a name for theyself like Nipsey did, then they too can be in the position that he is in now.

I think its def inspiring for dudes who continuoulsy bump they head against a wall signing to major after major giving more and more of they power away with each move, just for the appearance of relevancy, and minor perks of a major that won't really benefit them. And also its inspiring for people in everyday walks of life too like u said.
