this game doesn't look like "fun" though
.......
after exploring the third planet you see the same procedurally generated shyt in the different colors etc and find artifacts yada, yada and trade them to people you'll never actually see in the universe for the purpose of what?
.....
i've heard this a thousand times. so my question is this. do you feel the same about every game you play?
every time i pop in 2k16. i see the same nba players. the same player models. after i've seen 3 i've pretty much seen them all. a gym is a gym with a few different colors. a rim is a rim. a ball is a ball. whats the point?
i can do this for any fps too. all i see is soldiers in the game with army fatigues, fighting another war in the desert or snow or jungle. all i see is another world word II throwback FPS. same weapons, same explosions. same vehicles. all i see is another FPS game in the future with a few different load outs. with the same x amt of weapons. doing the same thing over and over. run, duck, jump, hide, snipe, shotgun, rocket launcher, grenade toss, pistol.
do you want me to keep going? every single game i just mentioned are not procedurally generated. they have a ton of artists creating actual content for these games. as good as they look. the game still has the same basic stuff in them from game to game from year to year from even game company to game company.
so in essence, a game like halo with probably 10+ artists on the game. only has so many different suits and characters and vehicles. so many maps. yes there's some nice detail in there. but half the time you can't even see most of the detail because the game has you jumping around, running fast, trying to shoot and hide. so how often do you get a chance to slow down and take in the great work that the artists have created? not often. you have to look at screenshots. You can look at this same stuff while in the game on NMS. sorry this aint halo. sorry this isnt your run of the meal all out all day action packed shooter. it never claim to be that. but yet their are moments when those things will be the case. when you will be chased by some creature of size that could kill you in one blow. so you wont have time to look up at the green hue sky and smell the funny looking man eating plant you're standing next to.
you mentioned trading. and said for what purpose? the purpose is to trade for profit. and to use that profit to buy better equipment for your suit(to survive in all sorts of different types of biomes and in different scenarios/environments on each planet you fly into. to buy better equipment for your gun to shoot further, more accurately just like any shooter game, to have a better mining laster so you can retrieve more items/ compounds etc. and to better equp your space ship. OR to buy a brand new suit, a brand new ship a brand new gun all things that will look different, and work differently.
again, how many guns are in the newest latest halo?
how many guns are in NMS? i would say more than any other game.
how much detail in the NMS procedurally generated guns is what will make or break the variet factor. from what i've seen in these videos/screen shots. their is a lot more variety in weaponary than i initially anticipated. but i wasnt even tripping on the weapons since this isnt a FPS at heart. but it was still nice to know they put in work in that dept too. if you see one of those videos showing the gun close up. you can see all sorts of things on the gun moving and lights lit up at certain times. not on a HUD but on the actual gun you're holding. this is not always the case with some shooters. they may show you the kick back of the gun, and a bullet fly out, and perhaps you get a count of how many are left. but thats it. you rarely get to see all the other moving parts(especially in the futuristic style games). so this was a nice touch.
how many different looking ships will you see? more than any other game since those are also procedurally generated. once i've seen 3, i havent seen many of the different ships that are in the game. so that idea is incorrect. they're not just changing a few colors and moving the wings around. some ships look completely different from others. most of what they have shown in the game was from the same handful of planets hello games made in a special demo build to take around to show people. this is another reason why you saw the same creatures and bioms.
but all in all. the entire variety argument is inaccurate from even watching the latest videos/screenshots. and to think the other games we love to play dont have even that much variety in them to begin with. so who are any of to speak on variety when it comes down to it.
lol at a lack of variety and all animals will be the same just different colors. you do realize there are certain TYPES of animals in real life that look similar, they just have different hair or none, stripes or non, shells or non.
i mean you do realize lion is a cat, and a tiger is a cat, and a house cat is a cat. all from the same classification of animal type. you cut off the lions hair, and you take away a tigers stripes. they will look identical darn near. just a size variation. same with the house cat. same cat. just much smaller.
this is real world. so why be hard on a game dev for making some things to what he/she sees in the real world just with a sci-fi twist?
there are only so many car manufacturers in the real world. i know a FORD when i see one. but there are different types of fords. i still know one when i see one. because at the end of the day their are only so many variations. and the longer i live the more i get use to how they design their vehicles. that doesnt mean they have NO variation or lack any of it.
