It was a solution based on your hypothetical. A ridiculous one at that, as the deaths of hundreds of thousands of our allies' civilians in South Korea, Japan, etc would most definitely follow any kind of military action. Not to mention potential open conflict with the Chinese.

There is nothing to be done here but prolonged negotiation and stalemate. There needs to be an acceptance that regime change is not feasible and the rhetoric needs to be toned back significantly.

This is a good thing. People think i'm crazy when I say this, but Nuclear weapons have made the world a lot safer for the major players. If it wasn't for nuclear weapons, we would have seen another world war by now between U.S allies and Soviet allies instead of the cold wars of the 60s, 70s and 80s. Europe would probably be fighting each other again as they have for most of history, Pakistan and India would be at war etc.

Ironically, the nuclear deterrent has made the world safer outside of the small chance we could wipe out civilization.
