Yooooo...you know what I just thought about? Okay, in other genres of music, the producer is the one with the vision, the idea, the arrangement and composes the sound while everyone else just plays the instruments. In hip-hop, the one making the beats is usually the same person.

When you think about it, what Dre does is really taking a finished beat and tweaking it because he heard something different...or changing up something because he heard a sound that could be incorporated, that may or may not have been tweaked by the one who made the beat. When you really think about it, he should get less credit than he does.
It depends.
Dre isn't only directing the projects sonically but from what I've heard, he's also the one coming up
with song concepts. Like when he had Jay-Z come in and write his verse for him. He told Jay-Z what
the topic was about, gave him the beat, etc.

Dre is a producer in the sense that he has the vision, no different from a film director.
On top of that there are testimonials from those with more than enough chops to be considered
skilled producers.

Terrace Martin who recently contributed a great deal to Kendrick's album, said he had
Dre in a few sessions and Dre showed his "Golden ears". Telling them to remove, add or change
elements in songs. :ld:

I think the proof is in the pudding, nothing stops all of these people from getting together outside
of Dre and creating something phenomenal and few of them did :ld:

Guys like Dj Khalil, Focus, and Scott Storch got work outside of Aftermath and proved they're skilled
producers but none of them built a damn near unstoppable production house like Dre did.

i agree

but like i said, suge looked at it like a brand

so that era, everything is dre

dre still did produce it tho

you think hiphop gets it's own special producer definition?

NO it doesn't

dumbfukk listeners just never understood what a producer is so they always said it's the guy who makes the beats

look at dre post death row

credits everyone

produces it all

don't be a dumbfukk listener

yeah, because tryin' to call shyt for what it is and knowin' who did what and who produced what would be stupid of me :rudy:

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
The DIY ethic is also in Punk Rock.
With that said a good proucer is what Dre is but in Hip Hop the Beatmaker and the Producer always get confused.
that nikka Dre is more an engineer than anything and honestly..it would be cool if cats got the proper credit for their best work..its like these producers get in Dre's "team" until their burnted out creatively and all their best shyt they dont get the proper credit for...

That's also a possibility but I think for the truly skilled guys their
best years are never truly "past them".
Dj Khalil for instance still gets placements and was all over that Aloe Blacc
album.

I feel u but come on fam...some of these nikkas dead ass wasted years being under a nikka rather than making their own brand..its like he doesnt find talented producers and tries to actually push their careers..he uses them to push his..its mad one sided imo...and since Dre gets alot of credit for what he does...I believe Diddy should get damn near the same amount of credit for doin the same thing...Diddy was damn near unstoppable in the 90s...he had a dope team..and he arranged..tweaked..and made sure shyt sounded right...his ear for mixing and mastering is top notch too...another one is Missy...she was involved with the arrangments on so many hits that people dont even realize..she helped shape a sound in the 90s as well..

I agree with that to an extent but personally I think puffy doesn't get the love that
Dre does because he doesn't have a "The Chronic" or a "2001" to his name
despite playing a significant role in the career of a figure in Hip Hop like Biggie.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not discounting his work outside of biggie, I'm just looking
at him solo wise.

A lot of people will mention the artists that Dre's sound helped to sell gang busters like
Eminem, Snoop and 50 Cent but I think his works as a solo artist also bolster his status in Hip Hop.
Generally we don't hear of puffy having a solo work to his name that's uttered (typically) in reverence like those two albums.

And I think that's part of the reason we rarely hear puffy in the "all time great" discussions despite having his hand
in quite a few songs that would get anyone else unanimous props.

*edit*
For the record, I think Puff is a good producer, so you'll hear no discounting from me.

Dubcnn: It's crazy you say that though. A lot of people been saying that for a long time.
Nah, but when I say that, it's not disrespect, because them nikkas will bring a track that sounds cool, but when he's finished with it, that muthafukka is immaculate. Like for example if you were to hear the Stevie Wonder song that Busta Rhymes brought to Dre before Dre touched it, you would think it's two different songs.

Dubcnn: But he still should get some production credit though.

But, at the same time, Dre didn't take that from Sha Money. And when he was doing that for nikkas back in the days, they didn't deserve to have their name in the game like that, because he did all of the work! So what you found a sample and you got a cool little drum file, but he brought the shyt to life, so he really produced the track! Producing is bringing the track to life! Beatmakers make beats. A lot of nikkas make beats. He produces tracks. So that ain't disrespect what I'm saying. I'm just telling you what's real.

I seen him make tracks from scratch. My whole record the nikka made damn near everything from scratch. "Ain't No Fun", Daz and Warren G brought him the little *sings melody*, that's all they had! Dre took that muthafukka to the next level! Warren G brought in the Donny Hathaway, "Little Ghetto Boy, laying in the ghetto streets." Dre flipped it like "Hold on, gimme that!" Took that muthafukka and made it straight hit!

Dubcnn: So you're saying it's wrong that Daz or Warren G would claim that they didn't get the credit they deserved on The Chronic or Doggystyle?
I'ma say it like this: they didn't deserve the credit back then because they didn't do the work. They made beats, Dre produced that record. Point blank, and I'd say it in they face. They made beats, cuzz produced the record. If you a real nikka in the rap game, you'll understand what I'm saying. I can make a beat, but I can't produce! I can make a beat, but can I tell a nikka what to rap about, can I tell him when to come with the hook? Can you break the beat down? That's what producing is.

Dubcnn: Right, but if I brought in the beat, I would still want my name somewhere.
But, if you brought in the beat, that's all you did, was brought in the beat. You didn't produce this record. This song says "Produced by" not "brought in the beat by". Keep it real! So that's what nikkas got wrong, and they started pointing fingers and try to bad mouth him, when in actuality Dre doesn't need ya'll, ya'll needed him! Because this shyt ya'll learned from him, that made ya'll better producers. He didn't learn shyt from ya'll! See that's what nikkas don't understand! Before The Chronic, how many hit records did Dre have before that? Everything he made was a hit record right?

Dubcnn: Right.
How many hits did Warren G make, how many hits did Daz make? None. None. Okay now, look at the tracks that they produced on The Chronic. Did they have any records like that by theyselves? No. You answer the question for me!

Dubcnn: Maybe on Dogg Food?
Come on man! Dogg Food was produced by Soopafly, Daz and Dr. Dre!

Dubcnn: Dre mixed it right?
No, Dre produced a lot of that shyt! I'm telling you, Daz and them brought Dre beats, and he produced the muthafukkas! "What Would You Do" was just a beat that Daz had did. That "bu-bump, bu-bump", the nikka Dre put all that shyt on it, that *sings* What would you do, whaa *sings* just to give it that other shyt! I'm telling you what I know man! nikkas gotta give Dre the ultimate respect. nikkas try to bash him and cut his knees down like he didn't do nothing nikka, he's the saviour man! Because what he did was, he showed nikkas how to produce. Because nikkas was good at making beats, but he showed you nikkas how to produce! If ya'll had really did what ya'll say ya'll did, ya'll woulda put records out that sold 3-4 million on your own, like he did. I still have to see it!

All the records that they put out solo wise, GARBAGE. Warren G's last record, HOT TO DEATH. The records in between, I don't know. And these are my homeboys, I don't lie to you, I tell it like it is!

^^ shyt like this could borderline make me furious if I want it shows snoop doesn't know WTF he's talking about. Not everybody could juice up a track like Dre. But to say bringing the beat is nothing is fukking disrespectful. You might be the greatest barternder in the world and make the best mixed drinks. But if nobody brings your ass no liquor or nobody asks for a cranberry and vodka you can't serve shyt. Dre should be credited but the beat maker should be credited too. But this isn't surprising snoop feels this way cause all those songs hooks and verses he buys he prolly really feels like those dudes writing for him are peons and he's making all the studio magic his fukking self singing that G funk bulllshyt over reference tracks.

What I will say about Dre is out of all the "producer/rappers" who get they shyt written for them like him..Diddy or even Kanye for that matter..he has the best delivery of all of em..and sounds the most natural on the mic spittin other peoples bars...
