bill russell was a great player for his era.

that's where ima leave it. he's the greatest winner in league history and nobody's touching those 8 straight or however many championships in a row the celtics won in the 60s.

we give old players props, but that's where it stops. its the roc

Like I said before, Bill Russell was a great player and one of the greatest...if not THEE greatest...defensive player in NBA history.

However, when we talking about the best PLAYER of all-time, we cant just disregard the whole other side of the ball.

i just dont see how u can be a goat candidate, and average 15 in a decade that featured the likes of:

180px-ClydeLovelletteCeltics_display_image_display_image_display_image.jpg

as top 10 centers. how many of these :flabbynsick: are considered goat defenders? is wilt even considered a defensive stopper? obviously not since he stayed losing in the finals :flabbynsick: all the records in the world with 2 rings :stopitslime:

Your not even aware of who your posting, or when they played - your mixing 50's NCAA player photographs that were guys sitting on the bench and ready to retire when Russell came into the league with Jerry Lucas, a power forward from the 60's, and your confusing all of it with "Bill's competition..."!? I don't even know where to begin...

This is an example of Bill Russell's "competition", not the rubbish 1950's NCAA pics your posting. Wilt Chamberlain is an example of Bill's competition. Nate Thurmond. Walt Bellamy. Do I need to continue?

So a simple "pump fake" got Bill Russell out of position and I'm supposed to believe that he would be able to deal with THIS:

And :scusthov: at the lack of elevation in Bill Russell in both those clips....his arm barely got above the rim:heh:

Top 10 Centers of the 1960

russell started playing in 56.. so if the 50's were trash, let's throw his first 4 years in the league in the bushes. which means he only had 8-9 seasons of good competition?

walter dukes best season - 1960
wayne embry best season- 1962
willis reed best season- 1969
nate thurmond- 1968
jerry lucas- 1966

these are top 10 centers in the 60s. 2 of the top 10 averaged over 20 a game. 5 of them averaged more pts than russell.

Russell states how much he weighed right here very clearly, 240. And he states it at around the 4:50 mark
Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell interview by Ahmad Rashad 1997 - YouTube

Here's Wilt next to Shaq
Wilt Chamberlain shakes hands with Shaq - YouTube

Here's audio of Chick Hearn describing Wilt during the 1963-64 season (very early in his career) already weighing 292lbs. The clip is also from that very same season, so in the clip your looking at a 292lb Wilt
Wilt Chamberlain (nearly) dunks without jumping! - YouTube

Here's more of Wilt:
Wilt Chamberlain - A Real Superman (WIP#6) - YouTube

The guy was a longer Shaq, minus the fat. He was 300lbs, easily. I also have an article of him from 1984 when he was working out with Arnold for the movie Conan the Destroyer that states he had just weighed in (for the movie) at no less than 327lbs.

its mind boggling looking back, and seeing the all nba teams and mvps some of those years. look at these stat lines, and tell me which one should belong to the mvp and 1st team all nba and which one should be on the second team.

44.8/24.3/.528 fg% all of which led the league
16.8/23.6/.432 fg%

who the fukk voted that second stat line the league mvp? dude really put up 45 and 25 and was on the fukking all nba 2nd team :dead:

guy made the finals every year because he played on a stacked ass team, in a 8 team league. put a few more stars on the heat, keep one other good team, and have 6 mediocre or plain poor teams in the league and see how many finals they make only having to win one playoff series to reach the finals

*For the Advanced Stat Nerds on here*

Bill Russell's career PER is only 18.9 (Good for 97th in NBA history), his True Shooting % is 47.1% (Not even in the 250 Players in NBA History), his eFG% is 44.0% (Not even in the top 250 Players in NBA History):mjpls:

In today's NBA his career PER of 18.9 puts him below big men such as Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Garnett, Amare Stoudemire, Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol, Elton Brand, Chris Bosh, Al Jefferson, LaMarcus Aldridge, Zach Randolph, David Lee, and David West who all have higher career PERs.:yeshrug:

His career BEST True Shooting % was 50.0% which would only have him ranked as #256 out of 344 players in the NBA this season.....right above a washed up Elton Brand. At his best, he shot as good from the field as a washed up Elton Brand:ohhh:

:manny:

But he won 11 rings though, 5 MVPs, and was a great defensive player:obama:

My only argument against Russell is that there were only 8 teams most of his career. That's only about 120 players. So him being the biggest fish in a very small pond takes away from his accomplishments to me.
With that being said, I'm not saying he's not great, I just think it's hard to compare an 8-14 team league with a 32 team league.

Wilt Chamberlain averaged 30.1 ppg and 22.9 rpg, and 4.4 apg on 54% FG for his career.
Bill Russell averaged 15.1 ppg, 22.5 rpg, and 4.3 apg on 44% FG for his career.

Wilt outdid him in every category:manny:

Again for the "Advanced Stat Crowd":
Wilt Chamberlain had a career Win Share of 247.3 and Win Share Per 48 of .248
Bill Russell had a career Win Share of 163.5 and Win Share Per 48 of .193

Wilt outdid him in both of those categories as well.....whatever they mean:yeshrug:
