To enact his plan at the end of the night, he did everything to make sure Trick didn't succeed in either scenario. He wanted to take everything from Trick. Also what better way to make Trick think that Melo was still on his side by taking the bullet for him. He cut a promo in the back about it before the title match. He got Trick to trust him to allow him at ringside with Trick for the title match.

Then that allowed him to do sneaky things (knee accident spot) in the title match to cost Trick the title, then revealed the turn at the end with the attack.
