After thinking this through , i think every student in college should have the country pay up to 30% of their tuition for working where the jobs pay minimum wage, this will help those students trying to pay for college and have pocket money more than increase would ever do, the students get a break and the small business owners don't have to raise praises and reduce staff. The colleges and small business owners would get tax credits for employing these students and to be honest these kids need that more than the pay, just my thoughts, and if you a grown man making 9:00 hour by grown i mean over 25, well then you need a wake call to better yourself, i know there is a recession but 9:00 dollars an hour won't help you.

All The Way One Hunnid
Nobody working for 40hrs a week should earn less than $35k.

I don't care if they're shoveling shyt or swallowing d!cks.

The fact that a man can work 40hrs and not be able to pay for rent and decent food without credit or government assistance is a fvcking joke.

The greed at the top has to stop… or at least become more tempered.

See but yall dont want to do anything about it either. The rich mufukkas have hoarded all the money and whenever we start talking about taking some of that shyt back yall say dont do it, it wont work, etc.......

It isn't that we don't want to do anything. Taking their money won't work and in this case it would only hurt small companies who don't make a whole lot of money or those who live in rural areas. Also, in the end it would hurt workers.

Can you imagine getting rich only to see that half of it goes to the government? What would you do? Wealth confiscation is not the name of the game. Outsmarting those who would try to take your money by using ingenious tricks is.

There are better ways to help the poor. We have to see beyond these tricks and traps. No one is going to come and save the day.

The best thing to do is change yourself.

Taking their money won't work. I think you are a reasonable person and I hope you can see that. Other people on here won't see it if it was staring them in the face.

Some states began to heavily tax millionaires and guess what the millionaires went to other states. They didn't become millionaires by being stupid. lol Lets just say that those who stayed or couldn't hide their money won't be millionaires for long. We can't allow the government bully people out of their money, what happens when it is your turn.

Did you know that the income tax started out only being for rich people? The people at the time cheered, even though there was no such thing as income tax before. Why? They were happy because it wouldn't affect them.

Years later, after the government got a taste of spending other peoples money, they instituted income tax for everyone. The poor fell for the okie dokie and now the government pimps EVERYONE out of their money. Never believe it can't happen to you.

Now income tax is a huge burden for the middle-class and poor. (One of my parents pays a third of their income in income taxes, which one year was $30,000 and it was only Sept.). The income tax code started out like at 100 pages, now its about 73,000 pages. Many of it is loopholes just for the RICH, the very people it was supposed to tax. How is that fair? Where is the outrage? This guest speaker once told our class that this country favors business owners and property owners. If you are a wage earner, it will screw you.

I was listening to Thom Hartmann the other day and he had an idea only a mother could love. He said a solution to our deficit problem would be a 100% tax rate after 1 Billion dollars. The solution is not to ask the government to spend more wisely and to mind its money better, the best solution is to take peoples money after 1 Billion.

I just laughed not because I love billionaires or b/c I am a billionaire, but because it wouldn't work.

If you owned a Casino in Vegas and were making billions per year, what would you do? It is human nature. Would you continue to work if you knew that after a certain point 100% of what you made would be gone to taxes. Does he think rich people got rich by being stupid. They will evade, lie, hoard, manipulate, anything but give up that money.

I can't control the rich. I can't control the government. But, I can control myself. And that is all that matters in the end.

It's been an exciting 24 hours! President Obama last night, in his State of the Union address, highlighted the need to raise the federal minimum wage. And then, after we delivered our petitions and rallied with ally organizations such as the National Employment Law Project, the Praxis Project, CATA - the Farmworkers Support Committee, the NW Arkansas Workers' Justice Center, and others this morning, we received great news from Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Rep. George Miller (D-CA). These two Congress members were the authors of last year’s Fair Minimum Wage Act. Today, they issued a statement in response to the President's SOTU and announced that they "have been working together again this year on our own new legislative proposal to raise the minimum wage to $10.10. Our proposal would ensure that minimum wage workers, often in difficult and dangerous jobs, will not fall into poverty.” $10.10 is higher than what they proposed last year, and they will also propose to raise the minimum wage for workers who receive tips.
If you’d like to see photos from our day in Washington, D.C., on 2/13/2013, go to: Flickr: Food Chain Workers Alliance's Photostream & https://www.facebook.com/ROCUnited.

We’ll likely start a new petition once Sen. Harkin and Rep. Miller introduce their new bill so stay tuned, and we hope we can count on your continued support!

I remember when they said that when the min wage increased to 7.25 :jawalrus:
I kept ignoring this, but...

You guys do realize that the dollar menu is no longer a dollar menu. Many are calling it a "VALUE MENU" now. lol The dollar store is no longer a dollar store, it is $5 below. lol The latest round of price increases was because of inflation and not wage increases imo.

This is common sense that, all things being equal, higher wages will result in higher prices, among other things. In a lot of cases all things are not equal. There are other factors at play.

McDonalds doesn't sell food. They sell chemicals disguised as food. High Fructose Corn Syrup is the best thing that happened to the food industry. This cheap, government subsidized stuff is their bread and butter and has in the past kept food prices lower. This is the power of technology and invention. You are paying for chemicals, not the natural stuff you could get 40 years ago - and it was cheaper then.

About Canada and Australia. No one goes to Canada and Australia to make $15/hr. America is still the place people PREFER because it has the power to make dreams into a reality. If your dream is $15/hr then go elsewhere. If you have loftier goals then America is the place you want to be.

Australia and Canada may be going through a big boom (from oil discoveries) very soon that may cause their currency to be stronger than the dollar. These countries could be viable options for opportunists soon. However most high wage countries in Europe are suffering from their past decisions, because there is no boom in their future. They are not good places to be, even if the min wage were $35/hr.
