The problem is the console experience is no longer standardized but its still closed box hardware. Consoles keep adopting PC like attitudes but want to remain closed box and charge for things like online multiplayer. They're taking away most of the advantages of owning a console and adding in all the disadvantages of owning a gaming PC yet keeping the console disadvantages.

The guy that bought the PS3 at launch and kept it the whole generation got more value out of it at the highest standard of the platform than the guy that bought a PS4 3 years ago and now has to watch a Neo come out and have his PS4 become a second class experience in comparison.

How young are you? 5 year life cycles have always been the norm
