+1 for the new hangout. Not sure what is the beef any of you have with it. Also the people that are online for me picture aren't grayed out. I mean it isn't that difficult to figure out. Plus being able to continue my conversation rather I'm on my phone, laptop, desktop, or tablet etc is a big plus for me.

No. People didn't even know GTalk was running in the background of their phones. And not everybody has GTalk on their phone because not everyone has an Android phone.
of course im only addressing android phones because GTALK didnt exist anywhere else. Another issue was that google had no chat client on ios. If google had implemented everything that we wanted apple would of blocked it like they tried to do with google voice until the court force google voice onto ios. Google voice will be silently added so apple can't do shyt.

You are assuming everyone has a damn Android phone now?
It is built into Android phones however it is not built into other phones. There are many people that use GTalk only when signed into gmail on a pc.

This is absurd. You can't even tell if people are online when you view from the "Hangouts" panel rather than the "New Hangout" panel..

GTalk sucked. Google voice sucked too but it was convenient. Im glad they all going away and merging into one beast which is hangouts

actually my friend at her work does and other co workers, thats the only thing they can get away with
and whats wrong with hangouts now inside Gmail?? THere is a green bar under the user who is online and availablestop being a cry baby
and gtalk sync to mobile, desktop and tablets???
no big deal, its upgraded which is cool but people did use gtalk inside of gmail to answer your question
yup, gtalk was actually damn popular, seen it used a lot in college too
