Perhaps this got missed in the launch hullabaloo ...

Moto X on the Sprint, US Cellular, Rogers and T-Mobile networks will have an unlockable bootloader, and in addition, we will be offering a Verizon Wireless Developer Edition and a general North American Developer Edition.

Hope that clarifies some of the questions out there.

Motorola’s Punit Soni: Unlockable Bootloader on T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular Moto X, Developer Edition Coming to Verizo

Bootloaders and the Moto X, what is really going on here? Yesterday, we were told that the bootloader on the phone is “not unlocked,” but with so many variants, did that statement mean from all of them? Apparently not. According to Punit Soni, Motorola’s VP Product Management, the bootloader status all hinges on the carrier, assuming it’s not a developer edition. Let me explain.

The Moto X versions headed to Sprint, T-Mobile, and US Cellular will all have unlockable bootloaders. The AT&T and Verizon version will not be unlockable. However, there will be a Verizon Developer Edition and a general North American Developer Edition (which would assume will work on AT&T) in the future. We don’t have dates, but Punit has confirmed this info.

Here is Punit’s note over at Google+:

Feeling a bit better? The price certainly won’t change, but at least you know that you’ll have a version available to you that will work on your carrier of choice with an unlockable bootloader. +1.

just feel like it didnt live up the hype that came before it.

Agreed... but people were spreading some pretty ridiculous rumors in the early stages.. Had me thinking this was gonna crush buildings. It's still intruging though with all the innovations. Hopefully someone finds a way to port that notification shyt to the N4

That mentality is the reason why android flagship devices still lag. Moto X delivered a phone for the ages and yall talking about rumored specs. LG G2 will make you cream your pants then i guess. This is an actual smartphone nikka. Not a dummy smartphone

Samsung’s tablet army helps Android march past iOS as top tablet platform
http://bgr.com/2013/08/02/ios-android-tablet-market-share/
By Brad Reed about 46 mins ago. All this has happened before and all this will happen again. The latest numbers from Canalys show that Android has now overtaken iOS as the world’s most-used tablet operating system, thanks largely to a flood of smaller devices put on the market by Samsung. Overall Canalys found that Samsung’s tablet shipments nearly quadrupled between the second quarter of 2012 and the second quarter of 2013, going from just 1.9 million last year to 7.4 million this year. Samsung wasn’t the only manufacturer to show a big increase in tablet shipments, however, as Amazon’s shipments grew from 425,000 in Q2 2012 to 1.55 million in Q2 2013 while Lenovo’s tablet shipments grew from 354,000 in Q2 2012 to 1.5 million in Q2 2013. Canalys also says that Apple’s tablet shipments have actually declined year-over-year, going from more than 17 million in the second quarter last year to 14.6 million

WSJ: The FBI can remotely flip on Android phone mics to record conversations
http://bgr.com/2013/08/02/fbi-android-microphone-hack/

Anyone worried about being tracked by law enforcement officials really ought to think twice before buying an Android phone. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Federal Bureau of Investigation can now “remotely activate the microphones in phones running Google’s Android software to record conversations” and that it can also “do the same to microphones in laptops without the user knowing.” The FBI is now able to perform these feats because it’s invested heavily in recruiting hackers to help it improve its surveillance capabilities, the Journal writes. The Journal’s report suggests that federal officials do need to get a warrant before employing such tactics, which means that the FBI isn’t just casting a wide dragnet as the National Security Agency has been doing with cell phone users’

Ouch! Qualcomm says it’s “dumb” to make octo-core processors

Qualcomm-Logo-aa-4-600px.jpg

A Qualcomm exec accused competitors of simply slapping together cores, instead of doing good engineering.
Qualcomm is a highly successful technology company, and the more so in 2013, when competitors such as Nvidia and Samsung struggle to offer a credible alternative to the Snapdragon series.

While virtually all major Android devices now run on Qualcomm processors, the upstart MediaTek made some good headway in the low-end to mid-range market. The Taiwanese company especially did well in China, where most low-end to mid-range Android devices ship with a MediaTek solution on board.

But MediaTek doesn’t seem content with the scraps from Qualcomm’s tablet – the company recently made waves teasing the world’s “true octo-core” processor (Samsung might object to this claim though).

So, what does Qualcomm think about MediaTek’s and Samsung’s upcoming octo-core monsters? Not much apparently – the company’ senior vice president Anand Chandrasekher told the Taiwanese media that slapping cores together is just a way to conceal poor engineering. Chandrasekher didn’t mince words when describing the competitor’s efforts:

You can’t take eight lawnmower engines, put them together and now claim you have an eight-cylinder Ferrari.

When a journalist asked if Qualcomm would ever put out an octo-core chip, the exec went on to say that his company doesn’t make “dumb things”.

Of course, Chandrasekher’s blunt statement doesn’t mean that the chip giant won’t ever make octo-core processors. In fact, we probably really shouldn’t read much into it, besides a desire to put down blusterous competitors. After all, you might remember that Qualcomm had some similarly unflattering things to say when the first quad-core processors emerged.

In an official response cited by PCWorld, MediaTek responded to Chandrasekher’s accusations by touting its other innovations in the industry and its great performance over the last months

The fukk?

Anyway, I like the phone. I would cop for my girl right now if it were cheaper off contract and the Moto Maker thing was available for TMob. Can't believe only ATT has access to that right now. That was extremely dumb on Moto's part... even if they were paid off
