Why do people hold comedians to the same standards they would a civilian or journalist? It’s not to be taken LITERALLY
If you watched the epilogue Chapelle said taken comedians seriously is like taking someone ripping a fart in front of someone seriously. It’s mean to entertain and make people forget about their problems and laugh nothing more.
Some people now want comedians to do no punchlines and just serious political commentary lol
Think of all the comedians who host talk shows that get most of their material from doing political satire. Oliver, Maher, Colbert, Noah, Stewart. Comedians now have the platforms to make political commentary on a daily basis, which is watched by an enormous audience. These aren't just guys writing punchlines and making fart jokes.
Dave Chappelle toes a fine line where he mixes more lighthearted even juvenile humor with strong undertones, it's what has made him so successful and has earned him acclaim. However, in his old age, he's strayed from relying on those funny and absurd anecdotes like crackheads eating doodoo, menacing babies selling crack, and the homeless holding a train hostage by masturbating; he's now directly addressing headlines in a much more blunt manner.
He's making people furious, and there is no doubt in my mind that Dave understands this. His comedy merits criticism, both positive and negative, and should absolutely encourage public discourse. I believe that the fact that Chappelle can do this on a whim is a testament to how important and great of a comedian Chappelle truly is.
Dave ain't shying away from societal problems. Quite frankly, I think you have to be a bit dense to sit through an entire special of his and not think about the commentary he makes in his work.
