Fukk a Grammy

Alright is not nominated for best record of the year. Where are you getting that?Interesting.
I feel you on J.Cole in the fact that, I REALLY want him to win a Grammy because of how successful Forest Hills Drive was and how true to himself as an artist he's been since Sideline Story there aren't too many MC's out there who can have both commercial and critical success and not have to whore themselves out. My only issue is that I really don't think Apparently is better than Alright. I really wish he would've gotten a Nom for something like G.O.M.D (which had a fantastic Video) or Fire Squad. Alright is one of the crown jewels of K.Dot's album and I think that if I pick it for Record Of a the Year it would be disingenuous to not also have it be the Best Rap Performance.
I'm also torn between Glory and These Walls for Best Rap/Sung. These Walls is my second favorite song off TPAB, that shyt JAMS and I could literally listen to it 100 times. But Glory is more than likely the better/more important and socially aware song. It's a big accomplish for a Hip Hop song of SUBSTANCE to win a Golden Globe/Oscar/Grammy and Common is a GOAT candidate MC who truly deserves to be honored within the pantheons of Hip Hop history. I'm always writing and speaking about how Hip Hop deserves to be respected as an art form and a genre, and a win for Glory in this category would take steps to promote that within the larger mainstream culture. In my opinion it should have been nominated for Record Of the Year over the Weeknd

Nah, because you were saying that you can't vote for Alright for Record of the Year but not for Rap Performance. Did you mean rap song of the year? Because I thought you meant the big awards, and I was only going off of the nominees.I'm saying Glory should've been nominated for Record Of The Year.

Oh, as much as I like K. Dot, that should be Ed Sheeran's award (good song plus it appealed to everyone) but Swift will probably win. I look at those type of awards as just the blockbuster awards. A key thing to remember at the Grammys is that performers usually win something. Taylor Swift being added late is a sign that she is about to win something. K. Dot performing and not winning anything was rare. But Macklemore was also performing so that was a sign.My mistake I meant Song Of the Year. That's the one he's nominated for, not Record
I think K. Dot gets the nod for Rap Album just from the creativity standpoint alone. It was damn near a Jazz/Funk/Spoken Word album plus it had a theme.
Album of the Year is tough. I always try to be objective with that because of different tastes--> I look at (a) critical acclaim first and foremost, (b) commercial success and (c) (if it comes down to it), culture impact. Swift and the Weeknd are automatically crossed off as the two least critically acclaimed of the bunch (both under 80 on metacritic). I have no idea who has more commercial success between K. Dot, AS and Singleton. I'd vote for whoever out of those three had the most and if it's comparable then K. Dot for cultural impact.
I would give "Uptown Funk" Record of the Year. It appealed to everyone. Blank Space literally has the same beat as Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love. D'Angelo's record is way too under the radar and Thinking Out Loud is dope but Uptown Funk was bigger than that and Can't Feel My Face. They're all similar quality wise so I go with the biggest one.
Rap performance, I'd vote Cole just because I think he deserves to win one at this point and I don't think Alright is that much better than Apparently. K. Dot got this last year for "i." I'd say it's Cole's turn. He's the only one out of (Drake, K. Dot and himself) that has not won a Grammy.
Interesting.

Bad won two grammys and had 6 nominations overall. It's happened before though. Michael Jackson the Gawd performed at the Grammy's and didn't win NOTHING for the Bad Album. Bad, which had FIVE SINGLES REACH NUMBER 1 DIDNT WIN shyt
As far as Sheeran, from the articles I've been posting it seems like he's getting some "popularity backlash". Critics are getting a little tired of him and almost every writer/blogger/critic is choosing either Swift or K.Dot. I think that between them, they will split the two major categories, Swift will win Song Of The Year while K.Dot takes AOTY or vice versa.
Swift will CERTAINLY win something, though whether she sweeps or splits some of the Awards with Kendrick will be the question..

The problem with the way you feel that awards should go is that mediocre things are often popular to the untrained eyes and ears. If you just went off of what was biggest then you would have to give Star Wars the Oscar. You're biasing a certain type of film that requires less actual acting ability. The Grammys criticism is that it is an outlier in that it factors in commercial success too much?I look at awards as bookmarks. In my opinion you should be able to look at who won awards in a year( music, sports, films) and get an idea on what was happening when you look back at the record books
That's my overall view of how who wins awards should be determined. Not by who made the best music because artist make music for different purposes and everyone ears are different
This criteria for handing out awards also shows why Beck winning AOTY over Beyoncé is truly a travesty
With that said, Uptown Funk should win the SOTY, in a career full of hits it's Bruno's biggest one yet and it's song that is known and enjoyed across genres
Rap performance- I'm not sure how they define performance. I don't know how to answer this one
Cole has to win RAp album of the year. If that isn't rap album of the year than what is? Went platinum, expanding his fanbase, satisfied his hardcore fans and was the centerpiece of the biggest rap tour of the year

But with film you can easily see the differences on Revenant and Star Wars and appreciate and reward the differences. People have no problem doing thatThe problem with the way you feel that awards should go is that mediocre things are often popular to the untrained eyes and ears. Imagine if it didn't? Everyone would be pushed out of their comfort zones if they really wanted to win AOTY or something of that sort. It would encourage more risks. Swift would have to make 1989 and the popular indy-type album, etc. Albums like Thriller that do both would still be recognized. The Grammys are the only one of the major award shows that don't do this. We already have the Billboard awards, there's no reason for the Grammys to be a bourgie version of that.

Which is why I said I first and foremost look at critical acclaim, and then look at commercial success. Pop fans know what a good pop album is and rock fans know what a good rock album is. Beyonce should have beat Beck because she had a trifecta. But with film you can easily see the differences on Revenant and Star Wars and appreciate and reward the differences. People have no problem doing that
With music it's not like that all. People gravitate to the music that they like and place a greater importance on it
@Ziggiy called Nicki trash when I know a lawyer who's a Nicki Stan that would write a dissertation on why that Nicki album should be rap album of the year and put @Ziggiy to shame
I'm not hear saying Fetty should rack up the awards because of the year he had in 2016 I would say Fetty was just as effective in accomplishing what he wanted when he was making his album as Kendrick was
How do you award music any other way? People don't have the same ears and different music resonates with People differently
How can someone that grew up on Pop ( white people singing) accurately assess Jcole FHD and what it meant to rap and his fanbase?
They don't hear the music the same
