Yeah, Mark was cutting off blood circulation to Conquest's brain. As a result, Conquest developed blood clots in his brain and eventually died.

Mark said he'll never breathe again and seemingly chokes him but its not a lack of breathe that kills Conquest but a lack of blood flow to the brain.
The writers could have handled that better to make it clearer because they let us know Viltrumites can hold their breathe for however long.

I felt like he caught him on an exhale. Same thing that was going on with Oliver. If they breathe in it's almost limitless.
