There's this thing Nas and his recording engineer(s) have been doing since King’s Disease , where he’ll lay down multiple takes, and the engineer ends up stitching them together. You can clearly hear it: different volume levels, vocal inflections, even shifts in energy, like it’s a totally different take dropped into the verse. Or it might be that shyt that Lil' Wayne does. Record, stop, record, hear it back, record, stop, take it back, record.

For example, on this track, the line “And that rings loud, and reverberates” sounds spliced in. The volume and tone of his voice noticeably shift. And there are several moments like that throughout the verse. It just ends up sounding disjointed.

Y'all stans tell his team that.

That’s how he was recording with Hit Boy. They showed this process on his Master Class video. It works most of the time.

I hope he goes back to spitting full written verses on the album with Primo.

I think it’s cause he messes up so much, it’s not a style choice. It’s a task for him to get thru whole verses clean. He’s had this problem on stage, notoriously…and these are raps he’s known for years lol. He says he writes right in the studio now, so I’m sure he’s fighting for his life tryna get thru that shhit cleanly on one take, they gotta piece that shhit up like a qp of crack 😆

Nah, he can def record verses straight through and clean. On stage, it's more about remembering the lines, which is different.

This "punch-in" apporach happens when he "freestyles"/doesn't write his verses or simply records his writtens, and then adds to it later. Nas been doing that even in the recording process for IWW or I Am. He said this in an MTV roundtable with Rza and Mase. He said he would spit bars in the booth, stop, and then go back to writing more to finish the verse. And Rza was like "wow I do that too".

What? Lol, I’m not trolling.

He has trouble remembering his shhit. Why would you think I’m trolling by saying that? He messes up a lot. Instead of taking it from the top each time they just punch in where he left off, etc… He was notorious for often messing up bars at his live shows as well, he’s been improving on that apparently. It’s no disrespect to the greatest, that’s my dog…his memory is shhit tho, as he’s said himself lol

I’m just here so I don’t get fined”

I won’t take this as you’re just dumb and don’t comprehend what is being said but you can’t just admit that…I’ll take it as you’re just one of them fans who can’t compute anything but pure adoration for their favorites and anything besides that must be hate. I respect it, he’s my favorite too, pause…I’m honest tho.

He hasn't always had this problem in the booth but I feel like it's starting to extend itself to the booth maybe based on the frequency he writes and records he don't have time to perfect the shyt.

I started noticing it around LIG, maybe a little after? I can't pinpoint exactly when but when it happened it was clear af to me. It's crazy that most fans don't even notice stuff like that when they're listening.

Yeah, rap isn't really his life like that anymore, he's got so much other things going on so he's writing and memorizing and recording probably all in the same session type shhit, it's a lot...especially for someone who admits they be forgetting their shhit. But fukk it, most fans ears aren't trained to notice all the punching and editing and shhit so it's all G, they probably don't even know what we're talking about, lol.

As a recording and mixing engineer, this is exactly what's happened during the Hit-Boy series. Very noticeable if you know.
