Lately I've been wanting to make a few things outside of my comfort zone (some of it also impractical). It's gonna take a lot of material, time, and patience, but it'll scratch that itch that I've had for some time now.

What are you thinking of making?

I'm not a cosplayer, but I watch anime and see a lot of things that you could make wearable or I feel inspired by certain characters from animes that I watch.

Tōshirō Hitsugaya (Bleach)

I wanna make the most impractical cloak based on his two most noticable features, with elements of his zanpakutō (his sword) in it.

Mayuri Kurotsuchi (Bleach)

Idk what I wanna do yet, but I honestly like the color scheme on him (that and he's one of my favorite characters from this series).

There are others, but I'm still etching out things I wanna make based on the inspo I have from those characters. The cloak is definitely one I can't get out of my head and I may make a headpiece to go with it.

@Black Barbie so I bought a 1920's kimono pattern from Mrs. Depew. It's a digital one but it doesn't have to be drafted. She says it's a patternless one, this is the description "This type of pattern is not the sort that you lay out on fabric and cut out. These patterns are a set of very detailed instructions, diagrams, and illustrations that show you how to mark out your “pattern” on a piece of fabric laid out on your table. You use your own measurements to get an exact fit, and there is no printing, drafting, or taping involved."
It seems easy enough to make using a diagram so hopefully I won't have any trouble making it. I'll let you know how it goes

I'm going to save this one to my favorites. Have you thought about the type of fabric you're going to use for this pattern?
Post some pictures once you're done.

I was thinking silk chiffon because I want to wear it as a robe with my lingerie. I want printed silk because I think solid colors would be too boring.
I still need to decide which one I like best, I like florals a lot lol.

If I don't forget, I'll add in pictures later.
So this project of mine has turned into a 3 piece "outfit" instead of the 2 pieces, I had originally planned to make.

So, I started on the pattern drafting process about a week or two ago. I decided on a sweetheart bodice for the bodysuit, which will definitely have to be made of a knit fabric. The sweetheart bodice was what took the longest, I ran into an issue with the back piece somehow being 20" wide (that was negligence on my part). I highly recommend that you use a dress form in order to drape a sweetheart bodice, I made a flat pattern first then draped the mock-up on myself, which is difficult to do. I added darts to the front part to give it that classic 50's shape. I've also decided to add a lapped zipper (mostly because I like the look of it) and I wanted to add a Grecian neckline, but I extended it a little further up the neck and add some snaps to the back to make it a little easier to get on and off. I'm debating on whether or not to add boning to the bodice, because my boobs could use the support. I had to remeasure and my boobs are way bigger than I want them to be (I'm jealous of the itty bitty titty committee :mjcry:). The problem is that I've tried to find any info on my new bra size and I don't get a lot of info on how to grade the band size down. It's not a common size to find in stores and the sister sizes aren't cutting it. I've found them online, but none in that 50's style, I can't find any in vintage bras, so like everything else I have to make it, but have nothing to go on.

I started on the circle skirt pattern not too long ago, right now the mock up is hanging up so that the hem can continue to warp. The cloak will basically also be a circle skirt with the only change is the length and the radius for my waist will just be my neck measurement instead. I haven't decided on the trim yet, so I don't know if I'll go for ribbon or a faux fur. When I sketched out the cloak, I didn't really add any detail to it, because some of it like the cloak closure, I'll have to make (somehow). I wanted to add a dragon to the back of the cloak by adding some beading to it, I found some on etsy shaped like daffodils and they're around the same color (maybe a little lighter) than the dragon, but I think it may be slightly bulky for what I'm going for, so I may have to nix the dragon and just add other elements instead.

I also started on the shorts (I wanted a bodysuit, but I don't like traditional bodysuits) yesterday.

The sweetheart neckline I want without the straps, notice the darts on the front of the bodice.

The beads, I'll probably still buy these, but use them for something else.

Edit: I'm not a Picasso or a Van Gogh, but here are my sketches:

@Black Barbie those beads are gorgeous, what color fabric are you using?
I haven't decided yet, I might just go with plain white and just dye it myself. I know for the cloak I want to make it out of velvet, but as much as I want to avoid polyester velvet, I might just go with it because it's slightly cheaper than a silk backed velvet, plus with the right type of dye I can get it to the right shade of turquoise. I want to go with cotton sateen for both the bodysuit and the overskirt. I'll probably go with white so I can dye them to the exact colors.

Funny enough the beads are the same flower used for my inspo's squad insignia, so even if I can't incorporate more of his sword into the cloak, I can at least add more elements of him into it.

Have you dyed fabrics before? I tried dying white linen black once but it came out navy blue even after re-dyeing it several times. I used RIT dye. I need to up my dyeing skills because I want to dye a pair of white capris a pale pink to match my cardigan but I don't want to mess it up.

No, I haven't, but there's a first for everything. I'll probably end up doing some test swatches before I dip the entire thing into the dye.

So several mock ups of my sweetheart bodice later, I'm still having issues with the fit around the my boobs, the overbust is still loose, the bust... it makes my boobs look really really flat, even with a bra on, but I attribute that to having ill fitting bras, and no support in the cups of the bodice. I may have to give up on it for a bit. In the meantime, this may be my alternative for now (I'm not a fan of the bodice because shoulder pads).
latest

The only thing I don't like is the bodice. I'm not a fan of it because it has a shoulder pad pattern piece, and I don't have the figure where shoulder pads would look flattering so my initial plan was to replace a bodice piece that I found to be much more flattering, but seeing as to how that's going rn, unlikely to happen and I'll have to stick with the original bodice. I was hoping to make this a more everyday wearable piece. :/
