The world isn’t going to let them extort them for ships passing indefinitely. Neither will corporate greed.

Any country can shut it down if they, like Iran, are willing to blow up commercial ships.

I agree that getting "official" control over the strait is nuts and I have no clue how Iran could realistically believe they'll get that (unless they just looking for some bs phrasing to then sell as propaganda).

But regarding the bolded, that's not really true. Any country can go and shut it down if they are crazy enough to do it, but no other country can do it in the same way Iran can. As long as they have stockpiles of shyt to bomb and threaten/attack ships, they can continue to hide stuff and use their terrain and location in their favor. That's not something other nations can do.

I do wonder how dumb can Iran become though. Because they can end up overplaying their hand.

Doubt it. The zone radius is too small it would impact and kill Israelis. But then again they genocidal enough to do so

This conflict has everything to do with how their government treats their own people and it shows why they can't be allowed to have nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. Iran's actions in this conflict of indiscriminate killings and bombings have laid that bare.

I think you're wrong. The reason there is so much tension and violence in the region is because Iran has armed it's proxies to the teeth. See Lebanon, see Syria, see Yemen and see Iraq. It doesn't take a miracle. Iran failed in Syria. Iran failed and or are close to failing in Lebanon. It's time for governments to stop putting their hands in the air and walking away.
