Even though i agree with the point you're trying to make going gold in 3 months wasn't really special back in 96

No Limit D-lister were going gold with no problem back then

going gold did indeed mean something. i dont think alot of yall realize just how many rappers had deals, albums and were buzzing back then. alot of guys never saw a plaque.

no limit was a whole nother monster to itself. you cant compare what they did to the average rapper. plus no limit wasnt doing that in '96. that was '98-99. no limit jumpstarted the boom period.

It was Flash and the Furious Five but they replayed it.
I remember that thread from your tournament well :russ:

They were both dope. But Mall was on another level :wow:

Did anyone really consider Priority an independent back then?
I thought of them as a major since some Bay Area rappers were signing to them and in the Bay it was a big deal if you stayed independent as opposed to going to a major

lol. i had treacherous three on the brain. sorry.

yea i like celly cell & mac mall but i agreed with buddy's point.
celly cel made "its goin down tonight" tho. so i take him over mac mall/

i dont think priority was an independent. i think it was just the type of deals that were giving out to some of these labels like rocafella & especially no limit.

Reasonable Doubt didn't go Gold in 3 months...

Also, that's irrelevant comparing the sales of Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt is pointless the sales climates were completely different and Nas had no mainstream singles or stimulus package type features like Jay had.

I'm not even a Jay fan, but those who weren't hip-hop heads in '96 have to realize this point. Reasonable Doubt not being regarded at that time as some game-changing instant classic have to realize that it had less to do with Jay and RD, and more to do with the number of dope ass albums and music that were floating around.

The entire year was dope, but the second half of '96 was insane. There was literally an album dropping every week that you could cop and not be disappointed with. Not to mention dope singles still getting play for months.

Most of the burn in my area at this time was Nas, Mobb Deep, and Wu.

Wasn't poppin in 96? I keep seein nikkas sayin that no one was checkin for Hov and nikkas thought it was trash until Jay himself started sayin that it was classic later on. I was born in 95 so it doesn't sound right to me that the GOAT was considered wack :yeshrug:

So is that true or is the booth just bullshyttin?

It's the Booth just bullshyttin. If it was true the below would never had happened:

100 Best Rap Albums
Issue #100, Jan,1998 (in alphabetical order)

Keep in mind this was way before Hard Knock Life, so no excuses, the album was hot, and it was highly respected.

The World, but from BK
I remember "Ain't No..." made a little noise but the mega hip-hop tracks in '96 were "California Luv", "I Ruled the World", "Killing Me Softly" and "Tha Crossroads"

I mean Jay pretty much came out and said that nikkas didn't appreciate RD when it first came out:

I gave you prophecy on my first joint, and y'all lamed out /
Didn't really appreciate it, til the second one came out /
So I stretched the game out, X'ed your name out /
Put Jigga on top, and drop albums non-stop for ya, nikka! /

Doesn't mean it made no noise, and nobody cared. Jay just felt the album should have done more than Gold, which is evident when he spit "Reasonable Doubt, classic, should have went triple (platinum)"

Reasonable Doubt didn't go Gold in 3 months....

Just wondering where you got that info from? The RIAA says otherwise...

I was in the midst of the hiphop world in 90s

RD was a decent album with a couple pretty good songs on it

Didnt suck but nothing special at the time

Most checked it out based off the Biggie co-sign

I don't know why people are shocked that an independent introspective cocaine dealing debut album wasn't the biggest album of the year :what:
Often you needed some time or commercial momentum, just look at Kind Of Blue, that's the best example of one of the best albums of all time.

Lol @ people not fukking with it go back and listen to all the interviews of people calling it a dope album, only getting dope reviews. The difference is back in 96 your shyt wasn't classified as a classic just like that, often the classic stamp took a while if you were not moving units like Pac and Big. The jews over at The Source had some power but let's be honest they were all backpackers. Their negative views of RD was that it was too violent and too misogynistic. Compare the albums that got 5 mic directly and the ones that got 4, 4.5 and were changed to 5 later on, imo the latter is better.

In new york it probably was big but around the world no...people outside didn't no who jay z was until 2pac kept saying fucc him. then Pac/big died and he brought out hard knock life out and boom you have him today :yeshrug:
Show me where Pac said fukk Jay-z before he died :dahell:

We are talking about one of the nicest emcees, who had track on the billboard and videos by Hype Williams financed by brown paper bags on MTV.
RD was hot cause he had MTV singles with one of the hottest female emcees and one of the hottest R&B singers + the hottest rapper on the street single and Flex was playing that shyt like crazy. Word is that he got brown paper bags as well. Cause there was Roc-a-fella benzes, trucks and on riding around in NY, cause they were in the clubs with Big and Puff and blowing mad money and on.
Not cause of a posthumus 2pac quote :shaq2:

1:21 mark."fukk jay-z he's broke and I smoke daily" it's a Weak ass diss that made no sense

That shyt was not out until after the remix even though (which was released in 98) and it was recorded like around the same time RD dropped.
