Old Heads, what was it like watching The Matrix for the first time in '99?

Ironically the same hype as John Wick times 10. Movie came out of nowhere. Saw it opening week with my pops and was blown away. I don't think it became huge until it hit DVD and it was a must cop.

Oh yeah....That's another thing about the movies from 1999.
That was the year that movies on DVD really blew up. Before that you had a couple of movies like "Twister" that everyone with a DVD player bought to show off their home theater setup. But 1999 had a bunch of movies like "Austin Powers" that did OK in theaters, but really EXPLODED on DVD.

What got me was that every single part of the movie before he took the pill was just a simulation, which in turn made you question existence itself....man...

Total Recall did the whole "Red Pill to leave the simulation" thing first

Saw it in theaters day 1, and it was packed. Most people were hyped because the whole slow motion (video games called it “bullet time” afterwards) fights and superhuman action. People were talking about it. Before, during its theater run, and after. It was still popular when it came to video and was something that people would re-watch here and there. I remember there being lots of hype for the sequel too.

I remember watching it and thinking it was cool until the ending when Neo awakens as “The One”. One of the best scenes in Sci-Fi movie history.

Pretty much every action movie in the years leading into the matrix and after had the same look and style. Black leather, cgi action, cyberpunk elements.
And it seemed like they were all successful. That formula worked for a decade from like 94 -2003. So for me my reaction was more like, Hey Keanu got him one. good for him.

Main thing that set the matrix apart was that they took the cgi effects to another level.

i remember REALLY fukkin with how they jack into the matrix. That shyt reminded me of the New Johnny Quest series.
