Old Heads, what was it like watching The Matrix for the first time in '99?

the marketing around it was strange. nobody really knew what it was about, and the cast/directors didn't make you want to rush out and see it.

it really blew up when the dvd dropped. dvd was a new format and EVERYONE who had a dvd player had to have the matrix. I think it's the way most people were exposed to it at first

Watched it on DVD when it dropped. I was confused about the storyline as a kid but the effects and visuals were dope.
The impact it had on just about every other movie and tv show from that era was insane too. The bullet dodging on the roof and the slow motion Trinity scenes were copied everywhere.

Caught it opening weekend in the UK. Knew nothing about it going in. Literally sat there like :ohhh::dwillhuh::gladbron::ooh::ohlawd::krs::feedme:for the whole thing. One of my all time greatest cinema experiences

I kinda begrudge them doing sequels right away, because the mystique it could have had if they just did the first one, shown Neo flying off, then went dark for a decade would have been :wow:

I actually remember the trailer previewed on Super Bowl Sunday and no one knew what it was but when Keanu did the bullet dodge cats were pumped and word of mouth travelled around. Crazy though when I went to go see it there wasn’t that many people in the theater which made the experience that much more amazing. Went back told friends and saw it about 4-5 more times and the crowds got bigger each time and you saw people gaining interest. shyt was like nothing we ever saw before and the way it related to real life...mannnn. You have to realize back then that the internet wasnt as mainstream as it is now and still relatively new as far as communication so the possibility that this shyt could actually happen right around Y2K had people kind of trippin. The movie was a slow burn and didn’t start really hitting its stride until after the 3rd week in theater monetarily.
A few months later I swear everyone was trying to use that 360 angle shyt in videos and other knock off movies. It really changed action movies for a while generation.

I was more mindblown by Kill Bill, since I went into it without even seeing a commercial.

The Matrix, it was hyped up and dissected by the time I saw it. Even before all this social media shyt, life had a way of spoiling every good part of a mindblowing movie or TV show.

It wasn't until I got around a bunch of weed heads and we REALLY started performing an autopsy on it that I enjoyed it.
