So let's start off the season with my yearly player by player analysis with our QB group.

Quarterbacks:

Jimmy Garrapollo -

Spending the first few years of your career under Tom Brady's and Bill Belichicks tutelage can do wonders. Widely considered the heir apparent. The front office trade him to us for one of our 2nd round picks in a surprise move but it probably made sense since it seems that Tom Brady is winning the fight with father time and likely has another 4 or 5 years left in the league barring major injuries. Jimmy played the last leg of this past season and it was impressive how quickly he learned a complex playbook and how much rapport he had with the receiving corps turning Marquise Goodwin from a borderline underacheiver into a legitimate receiving threat. What is also impressive is his command of the field, his pocket presence and his release which is lightning quick. He also processes information quickly and and makes decisive throws. Plus he is decent athlete if not spectacularly fast. If there is a knock it's that his arm strength is about average but you don't need a cannon to operate in Kyle Shanahans offense. Plus teans are going to have film on him, so we'll see how he performs. With thay said of that his presence off the field seems very positive and that speaks to intangibles which he has up the wazoo. I expect big things from him this season.

Grade: B+

C.J. Beathard:

Picked in the late 3rd round of last years draft. He was put into the starting position after Brian Hoyer proved incapable of running the offense competently. While he had some good moments and some bad moments he played hard and never gave up. He also had a pretty good grasp of the offense all things considered. Now I don't think he'll be a starter in the NFL mostly because he physically does not have the arm or athleticism but being a career backup is nothing to sneeze at and is a multi-million dollar career and I'm ok with him as our #2.

Grade: C+

Nick Mullens -

Undrafted free agent from last years draft spent a year on the practice squad. He signed a reserve contract this January which leads me to believe the team thinks he could be an emergency QB in the future or at least merits development.

Grade: D+

Jack Henegan -

I believe his dad was a staff member of the team years back. A rookie from Dartmouth. I checked out some of his highlights. He's a solid athlete and has a nice arm but he's going to be a practice arm and I think some other team will take him in because we're set at QB.

Grade: F

Unit Analysis: Compared to the dumpster fire of last year. We have a much more competent group of guys. Jimmy could be elite but at worst he'll be pretty good. He has all the looks of a franchise QB and I'm fine with Beathard as a backup with some starting experience. Mullens and Henegan are interesting prospects and under Shanahan's coaching and guidance we can at least be players in the Lombardi race.

Wide Receivers:

Pierre Garcon -

Pierre Garcon I think will go down as one of the more underrated receivers to play the game. When we picked him up. I was happy to see him in red and gold. A lot like Anquan Boldin, he is a consumate professional and a leader by example. He runs a complete route tree, fights for the ball, and while he's not blazing fast you have to respect his deep threat ability. Now the question is where is he from a health standpoint. Neck injuries are serious and could be career threatening and they can reoccur without warning. So hopefully fingers crossed because when healthy he's a 800-1000 yd receiver even at 32.

Grade: B

Marquise Goodwin -

Long considered something of an underachiver in the NFL. We picked up Marquise Goodwin last year and initially I thought it was a mistake. He has blazing speed in part because of his Olympic pedigree but he had a major case of the dropsies which negated all that. Then comes Kyle Shanahan and Jimmy G who throws in the numbers which makes the balls easier to catch and there you have it. Goodwin goes from misfit to borderline pro bowler. Goodwin has elite speed and once he gets some space he's gone more or less. He's a great compliment to Garcons more traditional style and a solid return man to boot.

Grade: B

Donte Pettis -

I was critical of this pick initially, I'll stand by that. But the more homework I do. The more I think this rookie makes sense. All the experts who actually play football are all in on this guy and some think he was the best receiver in this draft for 2 reasons. He runs a complete route tree already which speaks to his coaching and discipline and many say he has sticky hands and the ability to make tough catches. Also he has value as another return man though the coaching staff would rather use a specialist long term as many see Pettis as eventually replacing Garcon at worst he is our 3rd or 4th receiver.

Grade: B

Trent Taylor -

He ain't Wes Welker. He's more like Steve Smith. Shoutout to Jimmy for calling out lazy analysis because I agree. This guy has the toughness and bulk of a runningback but has graceful hands and legit speed. We got lucky this guy fell to the 5th round to us. He's should contribute for years.

Grade: B-

Kendrick Bourne-

An undrafted free agent last year, he has surprised everyone with how much he jas contributed his rookie year. If you're noticing a trend. We have another speedy guy with nice hands and a solid route tree. How did we find this guy in the scrap heap because he's a 3rd round talent. Word is the kid is having a good start to the year lighting it up at mini camp. I think he stays on as a 4th or 5th receiver or in certain packages.

Grade: B-

Aldrick Robinson -

As a former speedster for the Falcons, Aldrick Robinson was a late bloomer but the injection of youth could see him being cut this year. It's so much that he has been bad but the youth movement at WR is in full swing and has made him expendable.

Grade: C-

Steven Dunbar -

Well we got a big body receiver in the UDFA this year. At 6'3 and 200 lbs, he's built like a tank and he impressed at OTAs which makes him a dark horse to make the team as a red zone target. Keep your eyes on this guy.

Grade: C-

Richie James -

A receiver we picked up in the end of the draft. Another super speedy guy. I think he gets stashed on the practice squad. Just because we have the receiving corps more or less set. It's just a numbers game.

Grade: D+

Victor Bolden Jr -

Another UDFA standout. Victor Bolden made his bones as a decent return man but getting suspended for violating the league's substance abuse policy is going to make him essentially an easy cut. Even without that he was a bubble player anyway.

Grade: D+

Aaron Burbridge -

Hasn't done much since being picked in the 6th round in the 2016 draft. I don't think he makes it out of training camp and is playing to make his case to stay in the NFL.

Grade: D

Max McCaffrey -

So we got Christian McCaffrey's brother. A practice squad player for most of his career. He brings intriguing size at 6'2 200 lbs but realistically his chance to get on the squad would be in special teams.

Grade: F

Unit Analysis:

Speed is the name of the game and we have plenty of it. It impresses me how much the receiving corps has improved in 2 years. We have so much talent from top to bottom and while no one player is elite this is a UNIT. Its a shame we can't keep everyone some guys will get cut/traded but this is an young hungry group that can only improve.

When it comes to the opinion QB play, or players in general...... especially on newer guys...... I never got the whole “wait till teams get TAPE on him” stuff.

Cuz my viewpoint been skewing towards

“And”:manny:

Or

“So what”:yeshrug:

And I now have doubled down on that abs feel more like that when one time I was looking at Skip & Shannon, and Skip was shytting on some QB and he used that cliche for his agenda then Shannon replied back “well hell they got tape on Brady, the got tape on Rodgers, they got tape on etc”

And he has a point, so what if they got tape..... truth be told if you make it to the league, there’s tape on you before you play one NFL snap and most cases your game ain’t gonna completely change

Runningbacks:

Jerick McKinnon -

Talk about upgrading. Despite not being a starter in Minnesota, Jerick was a major part of the offense being used more so as a pass catcher than a pure runningback. This is the same role he will have in San Fransisco as part of what will most likely be a 3 headed monster of sorts. One thing Jerick is, is speedy and that's the name of the game in Shanny's offense. Now because of his build, he's not reallly a bump ans run between the tackles kind of player nor is he much of a blocker but I expect him to be schemed to run in as much open field as possible. This needs to work because this guy is being paid more money than Carlos Hyde was asking for and he could boom as a receiver or he could find himself crunched by defensive players in a division where all the teams have above average to very good defenses.

Grade: C+

Matt Breida -

I swear this scouting team is very good. Another UDFA from the 2017 draft. Aftsr playing well in camp and the preseason Matt Breida ultimately outworked runningbacks with higher pedigree and became another back in our offense. He is a well balanced fundamentally sound runningback who has an extra gear when he gets. Barring any major injuries, he should have another solid year.

Grade: B-

Joe Williams -

A potential sleeper pick of the 2017 draft. Joe Williams is a another boom or bust runningback. He has all the physical traits of a starting back but many question his mentality. He walked away from his team in college and kept himself off the field with a foot injury last years after having a very good pre-season. I also have concerns with his field vision and ball security which are big no-no's in the pros. He should end up as the 3rd running back on the roster but he could just as easily end up cut if the players behind him show up.

Grade: C

Raheem Mostert -

He has been a pretty good special teams player and reserve running back. I think his skillset in returns keeps him on the team but he will have to compete with guys like Richie James and Dante Pettis in order to secure his spot on the roster.

Grade: C-

Jeremy McNichols -

I think this guy is cut this year. Despite doing well in Boise state, it asked little of its runningbacks except be fast, one cut and run. This is not the case in the pros especially in Tampa Bay and San Francisco which have fairly complex offenses. At best he may some value on special teams but even then that's a longshot.

Grade: D-

Jeff Williams -

A so-so back until his senior year. Jeff Williams is getting a shot in the NFL. At 6ft 200 lbs, he has a strong build but he runs like a track runner which is bad for a long term career. I expect him to get a spot in the practice squad since he'd more or less be the only developmental back.

Grade: F

Unit Analysis:

Speed is the word of the day but I'm concerned about the lack of a standout talent in this group especially with the money we're paying these guys. It wasn't an issue with the receiving corps because the talent is diverse but with the exception of Breida, all of these guys are speed backs and their success is depedent on whether or not the offensive line can open up lanes. Ball security is a lingering concern as well. We should have taken a flyer on an Alfred Morris just for a change of pace.

Tight Ends:

George Kittle-

After surprising everyone after being a 5th round pick last year. I thought he was a steal being CJ Beathards security blanket in college. But after the rookie season he amassed over 500 yards receiving and proved to be a more than capable blocker. He is the tight end that Shanaham likes. He's versatle and can play in the line of scrimmage and in open field. Color us lucky he should be our starter for years to come and can only improve.

Grade: B

Garett Celek -

Though not ad talent as his brother Brent. Garett has carved out a nice career for himself. He's worked his way up from special teamer to 2nd tight end. While not overly athletic he's as good of a blocker as they come and he's pretty much caught every ball thrown his way and he's made some plays with his size and strength. He's the type of player that will likely spend the rest of his career with the team. A leader in work ethic and toughness.

Grade: B-

Cole Hikituni -

Another UDFA pickup from last year. The Dirty Tini seems to be a favorite of Kyle Shanahan. He is primarily a special teams player but I think he will line up more as a move TE because of his size and athleticism.

Grade: C

Cole Wick-

Picked up from the Lions scrap heap. He has some in game experience and brings great size at 6'6. He could possibly be a specoal teams contributor but this is likely his last chance to make it in the NFL

Grade: D-

Ross Dwelley -

This years undrafted rookie. The guy is another very good small school athlete. His blocking is non existent which limits his utility. I expect him to be cut and then brought back to the practice squad.

Grade: F

Unit Analysis:

This is a group that got almost 900 total yards receiving last year. Not bad at all and theres upside too. Very solid with the potential to be great.

Offensive Tackles:

Joe Staley -

Entering his 11th season. Joe Staley remains one of the best in the business. A consumate professional he remains one of the best overall tackles in the league, while a somewhat better run blocker than pass blocker, he remains a very good blindside protector. Even though he has gotten older his talent hasn't dropped off much and many cite him as one of the smartest football minds in the league. He seems to be locked in for the remainder of his career here and he could have a bust in Canton once it's all said and done. Super Bowl or not.

Grade: A-

Mike McGlinchey -

The newest addition to the offensive. McGlinchey is the prohibitive starter after Trent Brown was shipped off to New England in a trade. While I have been a big supporter of Brown his weight issues have made people question his commitment to football even with elite upside. McGlinchey has no such issues. Considered the best tackle in the draft McGlinchey's skillset is a great fit at right tackle. He is an agressive run blocked and he drives his feet with great power. While he isn't eapecially nimble he is an adequate pass blocker though not nearly at Browns level with that said I think he can improve on that with an NFL training program and a commitment to improving his footwork. Also keep in mind this guy will very likely replace Staley down the line at left tackle which is the real reason he was drafted

Grade: B+

Garry Gilliam -

A castoff from the Seahawks offensive line. Garry Gilliam was sign by the Seahawks as an UDFA. He has quite a bit of starting experience but that was due moreso to a lack of depth than talent on his part. Even so, he is athletic and while not particularly strong he stays on his blocks as long as he can even if he can whiff on pass protection at times. He should remain as our primary swing tackle.

Grade: C+

Darell Williams -

Despite being listed as a guard. He has experience and the ideal size as a tackle. He made the active roster last year which speaks to his work ethic. Tackle depth is thin and I expect him to seal his spot as swing tackle #2 barring one of the other guys really stepping up.

Grade: C-

Andrew Lauderdale -

A practice squad candidate. But this one has a chance to be a future reserve tackle. He has the skillset to fit in Shanahan's system and has considerable athleticism as a converted tight end. He just has to get stronger.

Grade: D+

Jamar McGloster -

An 2018 UDFA. This guy is fighting for a spot on the practice squad. He does bring intriguing size and he was a solid player in Syracuse.

Edit - *Cut*

Grade: D

Pace Murphy -

A long shot to make the roster. I think he will be a camp cut.

Grade: F

Unit Analysis:

The starters are going to be very good. But If one of them gets hurt, the depth is murky. If Staley or McGlinchey get hurt and the line struggles, Lynch is going to get looked at funny for trading Trent Brown, even with his weight issues he graded out as an ELITE pass blocker and those guys don't grow on trees.
