Lifeguards are taught that you don't jump in the water to help an adult in a drowning situation because studies show that 9 out of 10 times, the person is in too much of a panic to be logical & will likely pull you down in an attempt to save their own life. It's sad to see stories like this but even worse that someone tried to help & they died all because someone wanted a piece of wood to make furniture?
I missed that day of training or they implementin new methods 30 years later.:russ:

j/k, but on the real..

Whats the point of being a Life Guard if you let somebody drown due to panicking, when people start to panic when thinking they are going to drown in the first place?

There are techniques taught on how to deal with a panicking swimmer and now they are saying dont jump in the water?

Lifeguards are placed in areas (beaches, pools, etc) where they have the proper equipment to rescue someone in a drowning situation... honestly not sure if Niagra Falls has lifeguards on duty (possibly just security or EMT's) as I'm sure they don't expect people to actually go in the water :heh: (I could be wrong :manny: )...

Also, even drowning itself doesn't, by emergency definition, mean they died in the water. If you die from complications within 24 hours of being submerged in water its considered drowning... even if that means on your couch at home... its wild...

And yeah they've DEFINITELY changed a lot in 30 years... AHA Guidelines from 2012-2015 are already going to have changes for the 2018-2021 protocols. Medical Science changes every few years & its annoying trying to keep up with all the changes...

I swim alot

I can swim a mile

I do not understand how this happened

I clearly saw duke gyrating about but how could he not just, like, tread water

I guess I don't understand *not* knowing how to swim and the ways you can move your self into going under like that

I read what duke posted about the current but...

So all that wood was on one plane. Let's say down to 8 inches under the surface

It was completely still on that plane

So if the water let's day 12 inches beneath the surface is moving fast as shyt, the orient as much of your body within the still plane - lay flat - plank so the motion is mitigated, lessened

I have no experience with all this but I have been scuba diving like 60 feet so I have been in a real body of water a couple times as well as to LA and back in swimming pools. Not quite, but definitely hundreds of miles

Yeah.

Shyt is wild.

They taught us to keep pushing off said person if they keep trying to "climb" on top of you for buoyancy.

Or a drop under the water method if they grab you, to slip out the hold.

And keep doing it until they calm down or get tired (we practiced treading water every training session for 30 min)

But to not engage a person sounds crazy.

Now its the "Throw, Row & Go" model & the only time u drag an adult out of water is by their clothing or shoulder... & that's only IF they have become unconscious. Too many good Samaritans & Emergency Medical Responders (Medics, Lifeguards, FFs, etc) have died from being submerged by the person they are attempting to rescue.

Psychology shows that a perfectly intelligent person fearing for their life will be completely in panic, illogical & inconsiderate in these moments which is why we can witness individuals who get trampled to death by others during a stampede.

The "systems" keep changing. For example, everyone from paramedics to doctors would have someone who was panicking or short of breath breathe into a paper bag. We've seen this in movies and tv shows as well. However, now they've learned someone re-breathing their own carbon dioxide over & over can actually kill them so that is completely taken out of BLS measures. Even Hollywood is at fault like when someone flatlines & the doctor uses the AED to shock them & all of a sudden the EKG shows a cardiac rhythm. That's not even possible... an AED can't shock a heart in Asystole because there is no electrical activity to shock. An AED can only correct a dysrythmia to a normal rhythm which means the heart is still pumping, just out of sync. The only thing that can jumpstart a heart that has flatlined is an extremely concentrated dose of epinephrine, like on Pulp Fiction... but movies still show someone with a flatline being shocked back to life when its not even physiologically nor scientifically possible... :heh:

Bruh, they did try and get him to grab on to something and it didn’t work cause dude was panicking.

They only had less than a minute to figure something out and no option was great cause like I said dude was PANICKING.

Only one brave soul jumped in to help and he ended up dying as well. So how much did that help?

Dude giving the commentary was kind of right, if your not trained in water rescue then a panicking grown man will kill you if you try and save him.
Not necessarily to be commended. It was the white dude's obligation to jump in. After all, he enlisted the help of the black dude for something as stupid as retrieving driftwood in a river with a 12 MPH undercurrent.

The white dude obviously knew how dangerous the river was as he collects driftwood.

Apparently, that undercurrent was just too much and ol' boy panicked.

Why would you get in the water if you can't swim? fukk is wrong with these folks .:mindblown:

Wtf. It makes me angry how senseless a death this was? I couldn't even watch the whole video when he started to drown because it was so avoidable and just stupid .

P.S. parents teach your kids how to swim or at least float on their backs. To float on your back you literally just have to take in air and remain motionless .
Did you not see brah swim over to the wood? The current was too powerful for him to swim back.

Natural selection, that was easily the dumbest way ive seen ppl die in a long ass time.

1. Why are you risking your life to get some damn wood?
2. Why did he let go of the wood?
3. A grown man not know how to tread water or at least swim a couple feet to safety is just pitiful.
4. Why not use a rope or anything to grab onto before doing something so absolutely retarded.
5. Dude holding the camera knew he was gonna record a death, tho he is not responsible in any way he should feel like fukking infant for just sitting there recording and not doing anything.

What a waste of life, imagine dying in this manner. shyt like this should be a small article in a local paper and i hate the fact we can witness dumb shyt like this.
