The key points being that they wanted to appeal to a broader Atlanta crowd and they structured their music specifically to do that. It was more than just hip hop for them, which automatically makes their shyt alternative.

yes you can.

they were alternative hip-hop with a broad appeal to markets outside of hip-hop, the machine that was pushing them wasn't even a hip-hop machine.

that's what separated them from the souls of mischiefs & pharcydes, and that's where the pm dawn/arrested development comparisons are drawn.
