Hip hop wouldn't even exist without other genres. Based on this article than The Message was "alternative". And you can tell some white dude who prolly isn't even a fan of the music wrote.

The reason I keep bringing up Dr. Dre is for context purposes. If Organized Noize was doing the same thing as Dre wouldn't that make him alternative rap as well? what makes them alternative rap and him not? Please answer the question

I can't for the life of me understand how someone can't see the obvious. There are LEVELS to this hip hop shyt and there always have been. Just because something has a hip hop drum in it doesn't make it 100% hip hop - in fact, shyt might not even be hip hop at all. Just because something has rhymes in it doesn't make it 100% hip hop. There are degrees to which people use hip hop in their music. Outkast use hip hop to a lesser degree than Mobb Deep. And you can tell by how aggressive/not aggressive the drums/melodies are (hip hop at its core is aggressive, raw) and how the song is structured (verses, scratch chorus or nah, lack of a chorus, sing songy hooks, use of bridges or nah, etc). Hip hop is a feeling. You listen to this genre long and deep enough you just know who's doing hip hop for real, who's kinda doing it, and who's pretending to do it while not even being in the ballpark.

Ive been listening to hip hop for over 30 years. I don't need an article or video to explain shyt to me. All I wanna know is what make Kast alternative hip hop and no one has provided an answer for me in their words. I know exactly what they mean when they call something alternative. So I guess hip hop started with Run DMC. Grandmaster and the Furious 5 were making R&B . The Breaks was done by a live band. I guess Kurtis Blow was an "alternative" rap act

Goofy video. We all know Outkast are the more commercially successful group. They made alternative rap, and that always sells more among cacs.

Listening to the tracks in the video though, and it's incredible how much better Mobb are than Outkast. Actual, rugged hip hop has never been popular with the mainstream unless someone someone got murked/near-murked

Obviously you do because you're still confused about a basic concept even after the frequent explanations. Which is why I said you're not well read. Alternative rap is not a new concept and has been discussed for decades in your average hip hop article.

I lived abroad but I got family/friends in the US and I'm here all the time. I'm literally in New York right now typing this. How and why y'all keep spinning weirdo tales and pushing the dates is beyond me but I'm guessing insecurity has a big part to play in it.

At this stage, I don't even care how long a person's been listening to hip hop. It's the oldest trick in the book used by frauds. You've been consuming hip hop for 30 years? Good for you. I could care less. If you're not willing to think critically about what you listen to, not interested in insight, don't think it's worth it to read articles, opinions, videos on the shyt and appreciate the culture on a deeper level, you're no better than a casual. You've been listening to hip hop for so long yet you don't know what alternative hip hop means and we've wasted posts going back on forth on this super-easy-to-understand, known term that was used in your average hip hop article from at least the 90s. You know damn well I know my shyt. Throughout this whole thread I just wanted to know how Kast was alternative. The best you can come up with is that they incorporated different types of music in their production. When I point out that other acts have always done this and why aren’t they called alternative you say I’m deflecting and won’t answer the question. This is what leads me to believe that most of your knowledge come from articles and videos. My knowledge come from hand in experience. This is coming from someone who used to rap and still has friends who make beats. nikkas sampled everything under the sun of it could be made hot

I can see why groups like PM Dawn and Arrested Development was called that. But Outkast doesn’t add up. Not their first album anyway
