You know damn well I know my shyt. Throughout this whole thread I just wanted to know how Kast was alternative. The best you can come up with is that they incorporated different types of music in their production. When I point out that other acts have always done this and why aren’t they called alternative you say I’m deflecting and won’t answer the question. This is what leads me to believe that most of your knowledge come from articles and videos. My knowledge come from hand in experience. This is coming from someone who used to rap and still has friends who make beats. nikkas sampled everything under the sun of it could be made hot

I can see why groups like PM Dawn and Arrested Development was called that. But Outkast doesn’t add up. Not their first album anyway

What does this even mean? Do you really think you're the only dude who used to rap? That I've never been around producers? I have no concept of what it means to sample and how hip hop samples everything under the sun? :heh:

shyt like this proves you’re late to the party. Like EPMD, Redman, the Wu, and Bone don’t have gold and platinum plaques. Like DMX wasn’t the biggest rapper in the game at one point
:russ:

There you go again with this corny-ass sneak dissing.

You're playing dumb. You know exactly what I mean when I saw actual rugged hip hop has never been mainstream. You didn't see these dudes getting songs hitting #1 on Billboard and shyt like that. EPMD, Redman, Wu aren't mainstream. Not in the way Outkast were and became, that's for sure.

DMX was definitely an exception to the rule but even he's not MC Hammer/Vanilla Ice/Eminem/Fugees/Outkast in sales and popularity.

The funny thing is nobody in this thread can explain it in their own words. What rap is "alternative" rap the alternate too?:jbhmm:
Yeah I don’t get it. It’s not a very precise term.
I can see “pop” rap, like PM Dawn.
I definitely don’t see how the first or second Outkast albums were a mixture of hip hop and other forms of music. I can see it on a few tracks on Aquemini. Liberation. Chonky Fire. Spottie Ottie Dopalicious.

What are the records on the first two albums though?

I don't know what the fukk these cats are talking about.

If Outkast was "alternative rap" on "Aquemini" then what the fukk was De La on "Buhloone Mindstate"?

What's funny is dudes use the "alternative rap" tag as if there wasn't years worth of actual alternative rap that would make even Outkast's weirdest shyt seem normal by comparison.

Hell, this was off "Stankonia", which is easily their "weirdest" album and it's just two MCs going back and forth on some EPMD shyt:

And you can tell by how aggressive/not aggressive the drums/melodies are (hip hop at its core is aggressive, raw) and how the song is structured (verses, scratch chorus or nah, lack of a chorus, sing songy hooks, use of bridges or nah, etc)
Now we’re getting somewhere.
So is Juicy an alternative hip hop song?
Is Doggystyle an alternative album?

DMX wasn’t the exception.Rugged hip hop has always found its way into the mainstream it just wasn’t the artist’s intention. Onyx and Das Efx both got classic singles that were huge. Even Run DMC were considered rugged for their time. I know I can name a lot more

Obviously you do because you're still confused about a basic concept
:tochilol:
That shyt isn’t a basic concept. It’s a non concept. No one used that term.
You post like you learned about hip hop from the internet while you were in Saudi Arabia.
Alternative rap is not a new concept and has been discussed for decades in your average hip hop article.
:tochilol:
What the fukk is your average hip hop article? :tochilol:

DMX was a huge star. Vanilla ice nor the fugees (group sales only) have outsold him in total album sales
Also outkast was nowhere near as big as him till they were on their sixth year in the mainstream and on their 4th album. They didnt actually outsell his two biggest albums untill they're 9th year in the mainstream iwth Speakerboxx/love below.
Simply put,dmx was a superstar from his first commercially released album

Mobb really wasnt that big and only flew to where their talent took them. They werent any more rugged than x,just lacking some attributes.

Again, there are levels to this rap shyt. So when you say EPMD were mainstream, that doesn't nearly compare to how mainstream Outkast was.

But here we are on a deflection convo :mjlol: I'm good, breh. It's been real.

I've actually said on this site tons of times (and I'll say this again) that I started listening to hip hop in '93 and really got into it by 1997.
Your story changes all the time.
I know because I came in the 96 wave.

'95 is a weird year for me because I spent it all in the Nigerian countryside. I didn't see or hear shyt as far as entertainment goes. :yeshrug:

When I was in Toronto by 96, I went to a 99% White boys-only Catholic school. No one was listening to rap.

Also, if you didn’t know Illmatic existed until 2003, and didn’t hear Shook Ones until 8 Mile, you weren’t really into hip hop in 97. Or 96. Or whatever year you’ll try to claim next :tochilol:
