i think its essential advice. flexing my core and squeezing my cheeks made my deadlift progress from 225 to 260ish within 3 weeks when my back was recovering.
this is how you press.. you fill your stomach with air / push it out / flex while flexing glutes/quads as well. you use your lats too

you weigh 170 I weigh 227. I can't overhead press 245 which is the same relative weight for me as 185 is for you. 

at my gym brehs to help keep me focused though.
