NHL has a point system so literally every game matters because you could have more losses than one team but still get points if those losses were in an overtime game therefore pushing you ahead. while the NBA has just wins and losses you get way more lead way with that especially because typically if a team reaches 44-48 wins they are making the playoffs so you get more room for error.

The point system with the stupid loser point in OT (a dumbass Bettman addition) is designed to keep mediocre teams in the playoff race and sometimes even get them into the playoffs. I hate it because teams will sometimes play very conservatively late in the 3rd to insure a point. Imagine any other sports league doing that and fans and media would go nuts lol. It’s one of the many reasons imo nobody mainstream wise takes the NHL seriously as a major sports league.
