Parents and hypothetical parents, would you homeschool your kids and let them learn through YouTube/online, and at least one hour of reading a day? 👀

I would use YouTube for mnemonic learning

Make them watch culturally relevant stuff that’s fun and engaging(Disney movies, regular movies, various tv shows) related to their syllabus and the culture we are in and then have them read. It puts pictures to the words they’re reading, so they can visualize the text instead of subvocalize it

That shyt helped me understand some things and I didn’t realize it until I was an adult trying to learn… the more symbols and cultural references you know, the easier it is to visualize and internalize concepts.. the tv shows and movies you watch a moving, talking anthromorphic concepts, no different from Egyptian hieroglyphs

But not straight homeschooling

nikka said let them learn through YouTube :mjlol:
Why’s that funny? Don’t you learn mostly from YouTube nowadays? Find out what the kid likes—non foolishness.

Give them a task, have them figure it out.

They like games, have them figure out how to make games :lupe:

half the ish i learn is through youtube, there is a lot of professional content on there. 2 of the companies i work for have youtube channels. the computer programs we use at work have youtube channels, etc.
i'd imagine the people saying "no" probably watch nothing but gossip and music videos or some ish lol.
so of course i would let them watch that for a portion.
the other parts would involve reading more than 1 hour
and then physical education.

If you homeschool you need to follow a fully accredited online curriculum which do exist. Learning through YouTube and a hour of reading ain’t doing nothing. The child still has to be ready for standardized testing and all . Especially if they plan on going to college. Also if you have no teaching experience, you wouldn’t want to do this unless it was a last resort, because you have to be present to go over the curriculum and whatever YouTube videos you could even reference . So you don’t have to be a formal teacher, but have to commit to basically being a full time one at home. Only way it works (which people definitely do) You can’t just have a child winging it lol. I’m definitely not against homeschool. Every child has different needs, learns different, and everybody got different things going on in the house. But the curriculum has to be just as intensive in regards to covering material as they would get in school atleast or they will fall behind. And YouTube is cool , but only as a accompanying tool. You need a real accredited curriculum to follow where your child logs in and y’all go over material together and they complete the work amd submit it. It’s like teachers give your kids the textbook for the entire year, but they have to still teach everyday. You have to still teach with whatever homeschool curriculum you have. It’s real dedication most people don’t have that both the child and parent have to use together

Understandable. Would you do it?

I have teaching experience but I don’t think that’s super important though.

Nah.

My kid loves school. I would be doing him a disservice keeping him at home.

I just know I have to do some additional education when he’s not at school.

My brother’s stepdaughter was homeschooled. She’s becoming more like a normal teen now that she’s in high school, but for a while she was extremely socially awkward. Still is.

If you’re gonna do it, you gotta have a plan in mind to supplement your kids socially. Probably more than normal. They need to be around other kids in some type of way

Because you said let them learn through YouTube as if YouTube would be their educator

You can use YouTube to supplement their learnings and to get different perspectives but I wouldn’t use it as a primary tool for my kids education

I also wouldn’t homeschool my child either because of how critical school is in socializing kids and preparing them for the challenges they’ll face in the real world

Id want my child to be taught within a structured curriculum covering a wide range of subjects and as a parent, it would be my job to supplement their learning with additional material to what they’re being taught in school. That’s when you can bring in YouTube, additional books and other online resources to enhance their learning

Being “taught” through YouTube alone would put a child to sleep 2 hours in

I mean, I have channels saved, that literally teach full courses for free. From elementary to graduate level. Math, English, Spanish, electronics, engineering. There's various texts that anyone can obtain that have problems and examples that these people are teaching from.

They are popular channels granted not as popular as Mr beast or some fool eating 50 hot dogs. But they are just regular people who have a degree in whatever it is they are presenting and they are just sharing the love of learning.

You don't have to subscribe or buy patreon or pay a fee, or donate, just watch, listen, follow along. A lot of the texts are either textbooks or very well written books that are recommended and you can usually buy them for less than $20 or get them from a library.

Some of them do YouTube live videos where you can ask questions or you can send them questions in email or they do have their own website where you can pay $30 a month and get real time results and interact with a class and such.

It's really just whatever the subject is. Math, science, reading/literature, electrician/circuitry. No political shyt, or anything that leans one way or another. No sneaky subliminal shyt.

Once you actually go down that rabbit hole there's a few people that do that type of content. I had to actually watch a bunch of videos and pick and choose who I wanted to subscribe to based on personality/presentation.
